The kn is only a filter that sits in the restrictive housing. The blackwing is also a filter that does not sit in the restictive housing. I would say the blackwing is better than the kn. Do a search for zip tie mod. there are many searches you can do about intakes. Most like the vararam intake because it is a true cold air intake and yields .3 sec gains in the quarter mile. This is the best bang for the buck. go on tech or general forums and do searches. This will help you.

And I'd like to also say that adding the "Icebox" to the BW you will truely have a CAI.

Which housing are you guys talking about? I thought the K&N came with a whole new intake tube that was less restrictive than the stocker? I also thought the Blackwing was just a giant filter that went into the stock plastic tube? Can you guys post some pics, as I'm very confused now.

K&N sells a flat panel replacement oil gauze filter for the oem air intake box to replace the oem paper media filter. The oem air intake system will look completely original except it will have the K&N filter inside.
K&N sells oil gauze filters of various shapes and sizes enabling you to build a DIY air intake of your own design. You can use the oem air bridge or chose from the myriad of after market air bridges and couplers to complete the design.
K&N also sells a complete FIPK air intake system to replace the entire oem air intake system. It comes with a new air bridge.
The SLP/DONALDSON "Blackwing" oil gauze synthetic media is sold separately, but many owners buy an after market air bridge, silicone coupler, "ice box" cover, etc to complete the installation. It can also be used with the oem air bridge and accordion coupler if that's what you elect to do.
People frequently make comments w/o fully understanding the question or understanding what is available from the after market.

I think the Blackwing is just a better system in every way over the K&N. Of course I don't have evidence to back that up except stories I've listen to over the years.

I pondered that when I was thinking of a way to improve cold air flow to the intake. Prior to doing this, I retuned my PCM to command the fans to engage at a lower temp than stock. The car ran a consistent 187 to 194 range in various exterior temps and that still remains with this intake mod.

I was trying to borrow against the zip-tie & callaway honker approach yet mitigate the bottom feeding and water exposure as well. All indications are that what I've done achieved that!

Using a remote thermometer fastened next to the air cleaner, I confirmed that the air is equal to ambient air temperature. Also, reading the air intake temp (using ODB2 port) while driving also indicated a reduction in temp.

Best part is it was cheap! If you have a 4 inch hole saw, a file, some J&B Liquid Weld, tape, and some form of mesh screen, you can do this as well!
