I have never owned or installed a set of shorty headers so you'll have to take my opinion with a grain of salt as I'm not an expert on them. Saying that, with 30 years of experiencing working on, modifying, building and racing cars I don't think you'll be happy with them. Is your goal to keep the car a long time and enjoy it? If so, I'd spend the money now (which can't be much more than a set of shorties) and buy a quality longtube header. We have 1 & 7/8" ARH headers with an off-road 3" x-pipe and it's a quality piece. The install was relatively easy and they'll last longer than me I'm sure. There are many good companies on the market making longtube headers; I'd suggest you go that route. If you want to save a few bucks the for sale section of the forum will sometimes have a net set reasonably priced.
Good luck with the project and keep us up to date.

I agree you're leaving some power on the table with shorty headers that really don't gain a lot compared to stock manifolds. I'd personally consider LS7 stock exhaust manifolds before shorties if for budget or emissions purposes as they're basically the same thing from the factory.
