Car: 2001 auto coupe that's bone stock,,, not a dd just a weekend street warrior and I want it to run low 11s high 10s but not sure how to get there. I'm coming from the import world so sorry for the noob questions. What I'm looking for is some different combos with specific info like if u go heads and cam with exhaust what size heads and what specific cam size and stall size ect. I've been doing some research but people r pretty vague. I know nothing of Ls motors so if I need some type of support mod please let me know. Thanks in advance for all help guys for I'm trying to beat my brothers 03 cobra ( it runs 11.50--11.80ish )
Oh forgot to add I'm working with about a $5k budget and I do plan on a stall already but that all I'm set on. Have no idea what size is *streetable* or what will worth with a good sized cam:/
I thought about that but is it worth it without a converter and headers? That's my whole budget.
Seems like guys are not putting down decent times with just a supercharger only, not many in the fast list to compare too....
That's because it's likely that guys with just a SC don't really go to the track. If you're gonna go race, it's likely you've got headers and maybe a converter, then you want to go faster so you install a supercharger.
Natural progression.
But, a supercharger with out supporting mods, while certainly not ideal, will give you plenty of power and perfect street manners.
Yes I plan on doing my own work, got good with a wrench owning imports lol
That's almost the same pros/cons budget list I came up with only I'm having trouble finding used blowers. Only seen 2 on here and seems there sold since I got no reply on my pm :/
Cam. Won't take much. Somewhere in the mid 220 duration and high 5xx lift.
Long tube headers x pipe. C5Z cat back.
A tune.
During this you'll want an under drive pulley, timing chain, oil pump and maybe push rods.
275/40/17 drag radials on 17" front C5 wheels.
10 seconds easy. Well, depending on elevation.
+1
We run a 3.90 gear, 4000 converter, LTs, C5Z catback, drag radials, good tune, OEM untouched heads/shortblock with stock lift/duration cam and will go mid-11s in good air. Add a more aggressive cam and you're there. Spray it and you're more than there.
Listen to these gentleman that have been doing it a long time. They know what it takes to run fast.
Don't be afraid to tackle the work yourself too, especially the cam change, and save some money. It sounds like you have some mechanical skills from working on other cars. I had never changed a cam in an LS engine, let alone a C5, but had on older style SBCs and BBCs. We researched the forum for tips and pictures and my wife and I changed the cam in ours. Yes, removing all of the steering components was slightly inconvenient but it was fun to learn, rewarding to do it ourselves, and nice to save a bunch of money. Lots of good companies out there to help you with cam selections but I personally use Bullet and will also contact Texas Speed & Performance when I go with a head/cam kit one day.
What these guys said. Getting that thing in the tens is no problem on that budget. Me personally, I'd go long tubes, full exhaust, 150 hit and a GOOD converter. On a drag radial that should net you a high 10 no problem depending on track prep, elevation etc. Save any coin you have left over and start saving a little in case you do happen to break something. If you want some details PM me, I've gone 10.0's @ 138mph in mine on a stock bottom end and if the trans etc could hold it I'd go up on the jets and lay down some 9.70's, problem is I can't hook as it is

Have you ridden in a stalled auto? I recommend doing that to get an idea of what you can tolerate as the larger the converter the faster the car will ultimately be, but I also recommend more gear to help the driveability on the street. Also if not willing to run a large converter, then I would stick to a smaller cam as a larger one may make more peak power, but the smaller will make more down low meaning as much average power which is what gets you down the track fastest. You'll beat your brothers Cobra at the track in ET, but what does he trap as a roll race may be a different story.
Thanks again for all the great advice guys, that all sounds like a pretty stout build plan but do u guys think if I "man up" and get the A&A kit with full exhaust ill still be able to beat my brother? Nitrous is fun but I can totally see the one time I'm empty is when my bro will call me out, its happened before lol
