Default Not worth it items thread?

So to me, this seems liek a good palce to post a thread of "these things claim X HP here, and are totally or nearly totally bogus/unverified/ridiculous". Things such as:

* Smooth air coupler 3-5HP
* Carbon fiber power ducts/bridge 5-7HP
* "Throttle body air flow booster" 13HP (sorry can't help this one: )
* "Performance hood seal" unspecified gain
* Throttle body coolant bypass 2-5HP

I know there are more so chime in guys. I'd like to think this thread could save new owners money
After all if the above worked hmm lesse ...that'd be 23-30 HP for about ... what 150-200 bucks? If only.

Now some ones I'm suspicious of ...
* modified MAF (claiming 10-15 RWHP) (~400 bucks)
* "improved" MAF housing (claiming 9HP) (60-100 bucks)
* recalibrated/moved MAT Sensor (claiming 5-8 hp) (30 bucks)

I know there is more but I happen to be sitting here looking at a MidAmerica catalog and those are up front.

Good list so far. All of the items you listed are snake oil.

Performance hood seal does not up the HP, but it sure does keep a lot of mong and nard out of the engine bay. It is not a performance MOD per se, it is a clean MOD for certian.

I can certainly see it helping keep things clean, yes. But performance?

"mong and nard"

There are aftermarket MAF's that deff work but they are hugh for FI motors mainly--vetterdstr has one that works great---ones like the Granny are junk and do nothing--I don't think the bypass gives any power but it keeps hot water from running through and warming the TB which could warm the air somewhat--

The modified MAF ends did give power and worked well but not needed since the newer 85mm MAF already adapted to this type of end and have no screen--

I have no idea about the relocation kit but I don't see how that could do anything--

Define "newer" If it does make a difference for "early" cars, but not for "later" ones that'd be good to know. Is this one of the changes made in 2000?. So earlier cars coudl benefit from the modified ends and dumping the screen?

The claim on the relocation kit is that it reads "colder air". Seems to me you'd want to to read the most accurate which would be closer, like where it is now.

Regarding performance hood seal:

I have the $5 home depot custom version and while it does not make any HP, it offers me more peace of mind for me to do the ziptie mod.

[b]Each wanna-be speed decal on leading edge of driver's door = 5 rwhp each

Eight-ball valve stem caps = 2 rwhp each

1000 watt sound system that feeds power back into the electrical system through the speakers when standing next to another idiot with a 1000 watt sound system = 10-20 rwhp

Even though we make fun of the rice-rocket boyz here, let us not forget all the Corvette people who swear by $250 air cleaners, 160 F. t-stats, invisible Teflon sprays that reduce the CDx by 10 %, Torco and other miracle fuel additives with hundreds of octane numbers...

I'm not trying to flame you or anything, but, the Blackwing ($200) is the best bang for the buck mod I have done. 160 thermostat for a blown Vette is the way to go. Torco can be helpful for FI setups.

Any idea on what years? I have a 99 so would be be better if I bored out the MAF sensor and pulled the screens?

I would say that is more trouble than it's worth.

Roller rockers:

SLP calims (now they've added the words "UP TO") 18 HP & TQ.. Does not indicate flywheel or rear..

Even if it was flywheel, at a 20% drivetrain loss that would be 14.4 RWHP

I got 50% LESS!!! With their package, I got 7 RWHP & 8 TQ..

Rockers=WASTE! http://www.slponline.com/view_produc...RTNUMBER=53304
