This camera has built in HDR processing, something I have not explored with the D600. I have it set to medium sizing. I noticed one thing right away. the JPG is much brighter than the unaltered RAW. I have not noticed that on the D600. I'm also not impressed with the built in HDR.
otherwise I'm pleased with the IQ produced with just Program mode. One thing I did find interesting, AUTO mode disables HDR mode
the settings:
Exposure mode Normal Program
Exposure bias 0
Contrast Normal
Saturation Normal
Sharpness Normal
Shutter 1/500
F stop F/11
ISO 400
WB Natural Auto
Focus Mode AF-A
Well raw is just that raw, you have to edit it for final product. A jpg by nature has less info and some color science built in which is why you see the difference. I find hdr to be a bit gimmicky. You can get same results by blasting the levels in post. Real HDR is done by combining multiple shots ant different exposures to get detail in all light and dark areas. It only works well in stills and on tripod. If it only takes one pic it is most certainly just brightening the shadows and darkening the highlights while pumping contrast through the roof. It looks OK on your computer screen but when you try to print it, it looks like crap.

the Nikon takes 2 pictures with one shutter actuation. one is something like -1.4 EV the other 1.4 ev then it does it's magic. I was hand holding and you can see that was not still enough to prevent the light movement. I think if you had a tripod and remote you would fare better

HDR is very particular and a lot of people complain about how hard it is to actually use even on the newest latest and greatest cameras
OK I am totally in love with this camera. it may be old news to all or some of you, but Nikon has an app called Snapbridge. it wifi connects to the camera and i can use my iPad as a remote, and I can download a 2mp image so i can zoom in and check the focus of the image
