My 03 Z06 at 9100 miles began displaying code 1214 & Service ABS, Active Handling, & Traction Control. The dealer diagnosed it as a failed EBCM and ordered a replacement. The new unit was installed and took about 2 hours. The part was over $800 and the labor was over $250. My deductible under a third party warranty was $100. The dealer wasn't interested in pickng up the deductible as goodwill even though I only have 9100 miles, and this is a well known problem, because I am 5 months past the original 36 months. I drove the car about one hundred miles after the replacement and no more problems. I used to get the code and warnings after a short drive, and usually when restarting the car or sitting in traffic. I believe that it was a heat related issue. Hopefully this is a permanent fix.
What's dieing? Have the replacement parts been updated or are they different than the EBCM's that are failing? If not, it's going to be an awefully expensive recurring problem.

That brings up a good point, one that I forgot to address.
When I had my EBCM replaced, they also changed the harness that goes to it, with an updated pigtail harness. The EBCM had a note with it that said the new harness must be used.

If I were you I would write a letter to the President of GM politely explaining the problem and that you think they should pay the $100. You will probably get re-imbursed. Have done this several times and they have always been willing to resolve a problem. Collected $1300 from them on one complaint (what I asked for) and they made the dealer refund what I paid for another repair which actually was covered under a so called secret warranty for power steering racks. The dealer service department charged both me and GM for the repair and my letter with a copy of the repair bill helped catch them in the act.
About an hour ago I was really sold on the idea of buying a Z16 and was planning on getting one around spring break, however, I read through this thread and now am not so sure, my old C3 is looking better all the time. Does the failure of the EBCM effect all models or specific ones? Someone mentioned Active Handling at some point and the connection between that and this re-occuring problem, does the Z16 have both, if so I'm probably just going to stick with my C3.
I think i may have this same problem happening on my 01 w/ 63k. The lights and DIC were saying the same things you guys have mentioned this morning when I turned it on. I drove it for a while, turned it off, turned it back on and the lights and DIC never said it again the rest of the way to work.
What is all this discussion about goodwill policy and dealership reimbursement/warranty??
Also, I see that several people have fixed this problem without doing the EBCM, ie. changed battery, cleaned connectors, grounding wires, etc. I'm trying to avoid the stealership at all costs, what type of checklist would you create containing simple fixes before having to take it into the stealership??

I wouldn't let the EBCM issues stop you from getting one of the best production sport cars ever made (C5).
Any time I buy a used car, I usually buffer $1000 in unexpected repairs.

Add me to the list. Intermittently get C1243. Stomping on the brakes to activate ABS a few times clears it up for a while but I see a new BPMV in my future.
2000 Coupe - 54k miles current but problems started a couple years ago.
I've found that NOT getting the SERVICE AH/ABS/TC doesn't mean everything is working right. On wet or gravel (no comments please - I work down a short gravel road), stomping to activate ABS once in a while will force the code. Doing it once or twice more will clear it up for a while. HEY - at least once it starts snowing it will be easier to do my little 'trick'
Add me to the newest member to get the EBCM replaced under Goodwill. I bought my car used with 25k miles, put about 5k on it, then had the problem. My dealer was very good and got them to Goodwill the work. I was out of warrantee.
I think I fall under what is being talked about here
I'm not sure what the code number is, but for the last couple of weeks now the 'idiot lights' come on indicating ABS and Traction Control. Additionally the DIC displays the fact that these items need attention plus the 3rd item yo'all are talking about.
I have gone to the Chevy dealer and they cleaned the contact points(?) and put dialectic grease on them???? Needless to say this did not solve the issue.
They put it back on the rack, manually moved the front wheels left and right and 'massaged' the harnesses??? Seemed to solve the problem for a day or two. But I did not drive aggressively nor reach highway speeds. Decided to see if I could make it happen. Drove aggressively(6 speed) and nothing happened. BUT............. when I tried it again and reached 60 mph ON IT CAME!!!!!!!! Coincidence?? Go 60mph and it comes on??????
Personally I don't think this Chevy dealer really knows what to do. They are thinking of switching the harnesses to see if they can get the code, but to see if it switches sides. Seems that what 'might' be causing this is being initiated from the right front wheel????
This vehicle is starting to cost me some bucks. I've had to repair/service other items and now this!!!!!!!! It's a 99 but has only 29K miles on it. How about someone recommending a GOOD VETTE TECH located in the Tampa area???? I don't think Ferman has "real" Vette Techs. I used to live elsewhere and I took the 99 to SunSet Chevrolet in Sarasota; they had a Vette Tech. Should I call and maybe go back there?????
A brand new one sells for $650+UPS from Fred Beans or GM Direct Parts. An EBCM can be installed in 30 minutes by any qualified mechanic. Here's where you go to see WHY and HOW to install it : E:\EBCM Fix\KLH-Racing - Active Handling, Traction Control, Antilock Brake System Info.htm ....dealerships charging more than 1 hour Labor + a $650 part , outa be called (you got it...stealerships!)
I got the service abs/traction/ah lights twice over the past 4 months. Cleared those codes and it was fine. This past week they started to come on regularly while driving but would clear themselves after leaving the car parked. Yesterday they started coming on at startup.
I've checked the main ground for the ECBM and am about to go check the connector. I don't have a problem buying a new one and replacing it, but how do I know that I only need to replace the ECBM and not the BPMV too?
I've got codes 1241 and 1160.
2002 Z06, 60,000 miles.

Put me on the list of failed EBCM's, I have an "02" Vert with 59K on the clock. Started off as an intermittent problem and developed into a constant one.
I considered purchasing replacement from GM Parts Direct, but decided to give having it repaired a try. I sent it off to a company to have it rebuilt. They advertise that they repair the failed part in the EBCM and they also repair all known issues in the EBCM regardless of if they are currently ok or not. They also state that they use upgraded parts.
I received my repaired EBCM back in less than a week. Installed it and all the problems are gone. No Lights, No Codes in the two weeks since the repair. Repaired for $350.00 by http://www.autoecu.com/
