Whats this ?
I'm resurrecting a 1972 LS-5, with the 454 block. There is this small pulley located on the lower, drivers side of the block. It does not seem to be "attached" to anything. I can just get my fingers on it from the top, and it rotates freely.
What is it for?

It is an idler pulley used on big block cars with A/C.
As I recall, it provides additional spinning force on the water pump. The water pump by itself could slip when the A/C was engaged.

It's the idler. There should be a belt running from the inner grooves of the water pump and crank pulley's, to the idler. It was used on all 68-74 big blocks with air conditioning, but not non air cars.

Here's the page from the AIM that shows the belt routing for the idler pulley on engines with a/c, (C60).

Note the belt for the idler is in addition to the others. 3 grooves on the water pump pulley.

I like to use a Gates 7320 belt so the idler pulley isn't in so far.

while of the subject of bb belts perhaps one you can shine some light on this one,
On my bb there is a belt that goes from water pump to crank, no idle pulley,
it is shown in a few of the pictures Alan posted above,
So what is the "correct" way to remove and install that one?
Being that belts do stretch over time and it appears the install is a force stretch it on idea and no idle pulley for tension doesn't that belt become somewhat useless as time passes?
On my bb there is a belt that goes from water pump to crank, no idle pulley,
it is shown in a few of the pictures Alan posted above,

Remove all the belts ,remove nuts and washers on fan to water pump ,put short belt on crank pulley then pull up on water pump pulley and slide over studs on water pump.These belts are so short they don't stretch much .Make sure studs on water pump are not too long as it will be difficult to get pulley over and spin engine over a little to center water pump pulley before final tighten
