Which is most likely to give you the best results: Using the launch control as described in the manual or simply putting it into Sport or Track, revving to 3-4000 and releasing the brake? I've noticed that in using launch control as instructed by the manual that the engine will rev to 2000 RPM, then drop down to about 12-1300 before you release the brake. The car bogs a second and then takes off. Never have measured a 1/4 mile run but my 0-60 MPH are consistently 4-4.2 seconds. 2016 base car with A8.

With an A8 if you're not going to be able to rev it up to 3-4,000 RPM without spinning the tires. Most people either use launch control or just give it full throttle from idle with good results.
It showed me that I'm a coward and haven't let it fly with a high RPM start and thought that I'd check with others braver than me.
Ah, well that explains some things. As an M7 owner I was much, much more concerned with flooring the car with the clutch in! I mean wouldn't that possibly go straight to red line and possibly do damage? For the life of me I cannot understand why GM didn't put up a little dialog box saying "Launch Control Engaged". I mean wouldn't the engineer geeks just love to say "Engaged"?!? I mean you could put up a picture of Jean Luke Picard in the process!
That said I eventually did try Launch Control. The M7 goes to about 3-4000 RPM which is much closer to red line. I was worried but thought if I didn't settle at around 4K I just might have enough time to lift my foot off the gas so as to avoid any red line and damage. And the car is supposed to cut off at red line anyway right?
Well it did work but I have not gotten to the point to trying to compare Launch Control vs. Human Launch Control.
You can't overrev the engine. The computer cuts fuel flow at redline. Also, when shifting for best acceleration the C7 has "no lift shift" so you can keep the throttle floored when you shift and it won't overrev.

Actually, over revving the engine is not my concern. Blowing the tranny or diff is.

Intellectually I understand that. Viscerally it's just scary.
In any event, a visual popup saying "Launch Control Engaged" would be welcomed...
For launch control, you do "dump it". Of course, after PTM.
Launch Control with the A8 on a base car allows you to go off the line at 12-1400 RPM which results in a bog before it takes off. Can the driveline handle 3-4000 RPM with the idea it would decrease times for a given distance?

I have several post on this topic. 33 Runs and I have used launch control on just about all of them. I run 10.7's consistently with my 2015 Z06 M7. I love it.
I've found in my experience that with the C7's to get best results with the automatic has been to stage, when the second stage light comes on firmly hold the brakes down & quickly floor & let off the throttle. This "flashes" the trans. Then watching the three yellow lights come down go on idle. You'l get a little wheel squeal but then it hooks. Just saying.
Launch control might work with DOT slicks, but watching the demo at Spring Mtn made it look kinda dumb. It revs too high for the regular tires. Too much driveline shock. If I launch the car, I'm gonna go from about 2500ish, and I feather it a little.
I'm not a fan of launch control especially the way they have it programmed. Too many steps to get it set up especially when you're at a drag strip that is quick to get cars lined up and released.
I just wish they had a one step launch control set up like a simple press of the center mode control button three (or four times) and it enters launch control mode rather then the current menu selection set up process.
I don't think there is any menu selection process. Just switch to track and press button once, which you can do before you get to the start line, right?
