Like to modernize the radio (Bluetooth, etc) but am concerned about amps in Bose stereo. Do I just have to make sure I have pre amp outputs? How many outputs will I need?

There are a number of very cool units to upgrade the radio/navigation system. A very useful website is www.crutchfield.com.
Start there and then read everything you can about the units you are interested in.
It is an easy install as well! I replaced my head unit on my 2006 a couple years ago. The speakers are actually pretty damn good. As said above, start at Crutchfield to learn more! The real key is to get all of the adapters, dash plate, etc. and this is about a 3hr install start to finish. Add about another hour if you do back up cam.

I disagree with that. IMO, they are cheap paper junk. You could probably get those mid-range speakers from Radio Shack for $5.

totally agree. The Bose setup in my ‘06 coupe sucked and the same exact setup in my ‘07 ZO6 is just horrendous. The wife’s factory system in her CR-V is light yrs cleaner...
I, along with many others, disabled the dash/center speaker and changed out the tweeter & mid-ranges with Kickers from a vendor on this site for under a $100. I kept the head unit and am pleased with the overall sound.
I put a Alpine radio/GPS and has a built in amp!! I'm more then happy with how well the stock sound is wth just the Alpine. Check them out, real good improved in sound quality!!!

If you don't mind me asking, what model number and what was the approximate cost? I've had Alpine systems before (in my good ole yellow '55) and was quite pleased. Not really looking for audiophile quality. Mostly listen to the music of my Magnaflows and soon to be ARH headers, but just want something more modern with not too much hassle installing.
The Bose speakers are junk but, but any mid level and up aftermarket head unit from one of the major brands will make them sound better. I have gone with an all aftermarket sound system but I started out only replacing my head unit. When I replaced only my head unit there was a nice jump in the quality and clarity of sound over the stock unit.
