Default Road Noise Insulating

Hello.

Love my 2011 Corvette Grand Sport.

But....I drive home from Kentucky to Louisiana every year for Christmas and on the 1000-mile trip, by the end of it, I am in a bit of a haze from the road noise.

I have just ordered the Double Extreme Insulation kit from Exotic Vette and will be installing it this weekend.

I also want to insulate the doors. Was thinking of going with 80 mil Noico (similar to Dynamat), then Noico 170 mil closed cell foam on top of that.

The rear factory wheel wells have a small amount of closed cell foam on the inside of wheel well liners. Was thinking of putting a layer (maybe two) of the Noico 170 mil foam there too and do a more complete coverage.

Any other areas that I should take care of to isolate road noise?

Depends on how extreme you want to get....i am doing mine now for a stereo. Biggest source of road noise in my opinion is the rear vertical of the trunk AND the rear speaker openings. If you look at the rear speakers, its basically open to the outside quarter panel. I am eliminating my rear speakers and completely sealing off the area as much as possible with an L shaped piece of mdf and silicone. I also removed the rubber flapper thing for the trunk vent, but you must keep that opening. For that, i am going to put closed cell foam everywhere to try and absorb some noise. I also filled in the rear decklid with expanding foam.

Check out what I did to get rid of the road noise, I can't tell you how much it improved riding in my vette. Be sure to look all the way down to #31 - there is the cabin vent that I modified that I think made a hell of a difference, especially with the road noise coming from the passenger side rear. I also pulled the rear wheel tubs and did wheel wells underneath but didn't use Second Skin - used the aluminum backed flexible flashing from Home Depot........

Along with the helping with the heat - this is by far the best thing that I did for riding experience.

Man. Quite remarkable! Congrats on tackling this; looks like a logical and worth-it, time-consuming process that has big dividends. Thanks for the detailed pics and write-up!

That's exactly what I am looking for. I ordered the Double Extreme kit from Exotic Vettes. It is supposed to include 40 lbs of dynamat. In addition to the material I will be adding to the doors. Thanks.

Get a set of headers and you'll never hear the road noise again.

Have Kooks and a Mild to Wild with the NPP exhaust. With NPP open it is full on race car. With NPP closed and cruising, it is quiet with no drone.

Honestly, it is not so much that it is loud inside the Corvette. Smooth black top pavement it is fine. The problem is grooved interstate roads and textured pavement roads. I assume the grooves are for rain drainage but holy **** it makes the interior of any car super loud. And there are some black top roads that they use a very textured finish and again it is freaking loud.

Here in north Kentucky, the road grooving is really bad. The grooves on interstate are not parallel with the direction of travel; they are perpendicular so you are basically driving on a washboard. Its awful.

I did all the above, including the wheel wells and I used the Blockit sound reduction system. I agree with BMF C6. I think it made a huge difference. Good luck!

Update.

So I installed the Exotic Vettes Double Extreme insulating kit. Took me about 3 days working 8 hours a day. Took longer as I was cleaning as I went and insulated the doors with a layer of Noico (similar to Dynamat), and then a layer of Noico closed cell foam. Also, installed some extra weather stripping on the outer edge of the doors and around the rear hatch.

I also rolled up a few sheets of the Noico closed cell foam and stuffed as much as I could behind the passenger rear speaker where the pressure release flaps are. That pressure release flap/valve definitely lets in a good amount of road noise. The foam definitely quieted it down.

Really made a huge difference in the amount of road noise. Car feels much more solid as well.

I used to be big into car audio and the home Depot stuff was thrown around a lot with 50/50 opinions. Some say it's a horrible idea and others say they're indifferent.

I would never use the Home Depot stuff inside the car - I only used it under the rear wheel tubs. I only used Second Skin CDL inside the cabin......

I ordered the Blockit pads from TKO Performance and put them in a few days ago. I could tell a big difference in cabin noise. The car will never be as quiet inside as my Genesis but it was a big improvement for me.

Cabin insulation is just like many other projects on these cars. You can spend as much time and money on the insulation mod as you feel comfortable with. When I did mine it took about a week working on and off to do the entire cabin area. If doing the cabin including the doors it will make quite a difference in the road noise. I doubled the insulation on the bulkhead, hatch floor and floorpan just to make sure everything was about as good as I could get it. I'm very pleased with the outcome. It just takes a lot of time due to the disassembly and reassembly of the cabin area.

Does anyone have any ideas on insulation for the cavity between the rear of the door sill and the tub area? This ts the area that has the black plastic bag full of something stuffed in the cavity.

Its all a matter of how much weight uou want to add. Carpet jute is about tge most effective sound indulation out there, but you end up with a real heavy car.

So much road noise comes from tires. If your tires are old age wise, worn, or grippy performance tires, you will reduce noise by WAY more just switching tires.

Are those the 3-pieces of rubber foam that you just drop in? (easy install) 1 behind each seat and one matt for the rear cargo??

Switching to non-runflats quiets the noise down too.
