Default Service active handling - steering position sensor

Hi all,

new to me 2011 grandsport with the dreaded service active handling message. Pulled code C0710 and went to clean the connection/ zip tie the connector to the sensor.

upon pulling the kick panel I noticed the sensor housing was loose on the shaft and the retaining ring also just loose free-wheeling.

imagine someone has been there before and didn’t deal with it correctly…

here are some pics - where do you suggest I go from here?

tried snapping the retaining ring back into place but I can’t get it to seat for some reason.. very difficult to see the backside so I’m assuming I’m not aligning it correctly or it’s broken (all the tabs seem in place)

see pics and let me know please!

Mine is the same - no way that ring fits the sending unit- did gm just leave it for the wire to hold into?

I dont know if this would fix your problem, but Ive read where the plugs get loose and need a plastic wedge to hold it tight. I too thought it sounded like BS, but Chevrolet has a part number for it and surprisingly its reasonably priced.

I’ll give that a try- I did get the circular ring back on it attached at one point seems friction holds the rest - code was steering pos sensor - unplugged and reinstalled but still no change.

folks... ive posted about this a long time ago but to fix this properly, you need to remove the steering column to fix. theres a bearing that is seated now where the sensor was supposed to be. I bet you currently have a lot of up/down and left/right play on the steering wheel.

The telescope wheels werent proeprly greased and if it sits on "full extend" for a long time, it seizes up. when you jog the wheel back towards the front of the car, the seized screw pushes on the lower bearing support of the steering column. this bearing is in a shitty plastic housing that breaks some clips holding the bearing in place. the bearing then pushes the steering wheel position sensor (swps) out of it's mount and it drops to where you have the picture shown.

This is really dangerous because if you are driving in a straight line but hit a bump, the SWPS thinks youre turning but the yaw sensor knows the car is not turning. this causes the trac control to lock one of the front brakes to assist you in the turn.

until you fix it, leave the swps unplugged. this throws an error code but will prevent active handling from trying to actively handle your life.

To fix it properly, you have to remove the steering column, unseize the telescoping lead screw (not too difficult - just need a few open palm impacts and manualy turning the screw to move the wheel.), push the telescopic portion back to where its supposed to seat, regrease the lead screw, reposition the bearing in its housing, repositiong the sensor in its housing, and reinstall the column. Do NOT allow the SWPS to rotate over, or you will need someone with a tech 2 to reprogram your center.

PM me if you need clarification - ive walked a bunch of folks through the repair. Also recommend doing this quickly as having no lower bearing support isnt great for the steering column.
