Anyone have any experience with these covers? The set I secured had no hole for the oil fill cap. Both covers featured the crossed flags emblem. I removed the emblem from the LH cover and it's clear from the inside that it will accpet both the 1/2 turn filler cap and the push-in rubber cap (which I intend to use). Any idea on how to remove it the bung? Normally, I'd hammer on the center shaft that would release the bung, but I'm only guessing and I do not want to damage the cover. Any insights would be appreciated!
After glass bead blasting and semi-gloss clear finish Emblem removed Center shaft that appears to hold the ring in place
The oil filler is on the LH valve cover on my set. The RH side has the cross flags.
Edit: After looking at mine again, I didn't think you could punch out the bung. Could you have two RH valve covers?

Hello,
The 70-72 LT1 finned aluminum covers typically had the oil filler on the rear of the drivers-side cover.
A black rubber push-in cap was used for the oil fill
The forward hole in that valve cover was for the PCV valve.
The passenger side valve cover had the Crossed-Flag emblem in the front position (no hole) and the crank-case breather in the rear hole
Regards....
They are a LH and RH cover as the oil drippers underside correspond to left and right (oil splashed onto the drippers then drips down on to the rocker arms). So, I'm confident that I have both.
My car is a 270hp '71 with painted steel valve covers but the engine needs a bit of dress-up when not being judged, so the valve covers and open element air cleaner are easy swaps for those moments. Otherwise, the factory alloy valve covers are visually the best.
I might heat the ring and see what happens?...

Appears that those are 2 RH side (passenger) L-82 valve covers.
The left and right covers were the same casting (notice both an LH and RH casting number in the pic below). Chevrolet just opened up the hole (and notched it if it was for a twist cap) in the left hand cover for the oil cap, and glued the flag emblem to the right cover. But I have no idea what Chevrolet did to open up the oil fill hole?
I would "guess" it has to be drilled / cut out.
Chevy cast the cover as one piece.
To fit both sides.
They would not add another part to plug the hole. There was no hole to plug.
They would cut out the side needing the oil fill cap.
I would drill a decent sized hole.
Then finish up with a dremel tool cutter. It's aluminum. Grinds easy.
Buy the fill cap first to make sure of the size.
For the twist cap version the sealing surface on the top must be very smooth.
Personally, it would be easier to get the screw cap version to seal well, in your case, versus the push in fill cap plug.
Also make sure the baffle box on the inside of the PCV hole is still there.
Hello GC3,
I just re-read this thread and noticed that you mentioned semi-gloss clear.
I did that to finned covers I bought for my 71 350/270.
After not too long a time I saw the heat was really yellowing the paint.
I had a difficult time getting the clear paint off without marring the aluminum surface.
Be careful!
Regards.....
