Just a FYI for anyone considering painting their motor with Dupli-Color 1620 Chevy Orange…
First- I have had great success with this product over the last few years. I thoroughly wheel/sand old paint, degrease, tape off, and prepare for a 3 step process using Dupli-Color Primer, 3 coats of 1620, and 2-3 coats of Clear. As I began the process today, I had 2 cans from a previous build, and 2 new cans on hand to complete the job. The old cans- great coverage, vibrant color, quick drying. The new cans- garbage. Color is semi-transparent, has a red hue, poor coverage, and runs easily. The difference? The old cans have a 2016 info label. The new cans have a 2024 info label. My suggestion to anyone who in considering using this product is to RUN to your nearest parts store (O’Reilly carries Dupli-Color products) and grab as many of the 2016 label cans that they may have on the shelf. You will NOT be happy with the new formula. I attached a pic for your reference to show color disparity. Thankfully, the other neighborhood O’Reilly had 4 cans of the old formula 1620 on the shelf. I Will need to rescuff and shoot.
I have used VHT Chevy orange engine paint for years and never any complaints. It can be hard to find sometimes. I bought the last 2 cans at the Reno Nevada Summit store a few years ago and another 4 cans last year through my work. Haven’t been able to get any more lately. By the way, I work for O’Reilly auto parts.

the paint was flaking off on my oil pan. having no leaks I was hesitant to pull the pan but the flaking paint was ugly. I decided to brush paint it. after scraping off the flaking paint ( the side of a brass putty knife worked great). I then degreased and cleaned with wax and grease re mover, spot primed the bare metal spots with rust-oleum primer. made some cardboard masks to cover the starter, oil filter, fly wheel cover and balancer. I then brush painted with a product called motor coater/ chevy orange. amazed how nice this product flowed. it can also be sprayed. old school work for sure. Bob, Akron,OH
I use code 72 hugger orange mixed in single stage urethane and shoot it from my detail gun. Epoxy primer over the steel. Add a bit of red for the early small blocks.
