Default Charcoal Canister ?

Hey there all C3'ers,
Can anyone share some insight(s) with me about having my 78's Charcoal Canister overhauled?

You don't "fix" them, you replace them.

Hello JJ78,
Forum member CraigH from Australia posted a thread in which he detailed with photos the rebuilding of the charcoal canisters in the early cars.
Lots of text and photos.
I'm not sure if the info applies to later canisters or not..
Regards......

Here's another link to a thread by n8r showing a rebuild.

Hello JJ78,
I'm afraid the canister REALLY needs to come off the car to work on it.
Sorry....

If you really want your 78 to remain completely original, then removing and rebuilding your charcoal canister is your best option.
The charcoal can be easily replaced with the same stuff in fish aquarium filters and I believe the paper element is still available or you can make your own.
If you don’t absolutely need your 78 to be factory original there are other alternatives like seeing if another year model canister will work.
You can also install a marine type charcoal canister and there are several that are offered on line that can be mounted near the fuel tank and don’t require engine vacuum to operate.
The other option is to completely delete the charcoal canister and either purchase a vented gas cap or modify your gas cap to vent the fuel tank.
Many people complain about fuel smells in their garage when running vented gas caps.
I’ve had boats, motorcycles, and classic cars all with factory vented gas caps and never had any fuel vapor smells in my garages, but I never park any vehicle in my garage with a full tank of gas.
