Yes you definetly need to adjust the timing. Marking the rotor and distributor, is just so the timing gets close enough to start and run. You then need to make timing adjustments P.S. now that the car is running I'll give you 15.00 cash for it.
Okay - I sprayed some carb cleaner and went for a spin and that didnt solve it.
So it took off the flat filter top, kept the short, 2" filter and put the chrome lid back on. The chrome lid sits 1" higher than the flat filter top.
Seems to be running ok! Im sure the timing still needs to be set and the carb tweaked, but most of the "bog" is gone!!
I thought it might be the case that there needed to be some room above the primaries and that flat filter top was too close. And my hood was probably sitting right on the filter top so Im sure no air was getting through it anyway...
