I need to buy a low profile jack. My Craftsman 3 ton (p.o.s ) is useless. I'm looking for a jack that I can control the descent. With the aforementioned Craftsman ( p.o.s ) you have to turn the handle to either engage the jack to raise it or to lower it. It is 10 years old and I've never really liked it. Recently, as I've had the vette up in the air, the jack handle has pulled out of the jack cradle leaving me in a most precarious position. (read: I was so f'n pissed off, I almost gouged my eyes out)... Anywho, I live in Palmetto, so anywhere nearby would work (Bradenton, Tampa, St. Pete, Sarasota... etc).
Watch out for the cheapie brands. I had a low cost jack that I bought from pepboys collapse on me after only 15 lifts. Fluid squirted out all over the place. What a POS. Craftsman has a good quality product that I trust.
I am partial to the Torin Big Red Race Jack. It has worked well for me over the past year or so.
How do you lower the Torin? Do you turn the handle and can you easily control the descent? I'm looking for a jack that doesn't utilize a set screw to hold the handle in place. As I mentioned in my original post, I've been burned a few times by this type of set up.
I've had my aluminum craftsman since '04 with no complaints. It was a little pricey at $200, but well worth it in my opinion. It uses a spring loaded pin to hold the handle. I've used it pretty often, twice a weekend, since I have owned it.
The Harbor Freight jacks are like gold fish. It may make it a week, or it may make it a year, you never know. The cheaper price is not worth the damage it can cause, in my opinion.
Steve over at ULTIMATE GARAGE will hook you up with the AC Hydraulics DK13HLQ floor jack. He also has some flat top jack stands. http://www.ultimategarage.com/

It's the last jack you will ever have to purchase. Been using mine for years and it's great. Slides right under the front or rear of my lowered (on factory bolts) Corvette with no problem. Expensive but well worth it.

The Crafstman I have is old enough to vote!! I've had it for 10 years at least. I'll check out the aluminum craftsman you mention.

I was looking at this jack earlier. Definetly in the running.
Thanks to all for the advice. I have enough info to make a purchase.

Thanks.
Yes, you turn the handle to control the descent. I am not sure about the "set screw", but I do know that the bottom half of the handle doesn't come out of the saddle. Instead you can remove half of the handle (comes apart in the middle) for storage or transport.
As far as I know, it is a pretty standard jack, just low profile. I apologize if I misunderstood your original post and that isn't what you are looking for.
