Turkey Run less tahn a week!

I hope not, as that's a really good show, and better for sale prices than at the speedway.

Bellair merchants stunned plaza owners barring car show

DAYTONA BEACH -- A red-and-white sign warned hot-rod enthusiasts to keep their vehicles out of the Bellair Plaza.
A traditional informal Thanksgiving-week car show will not be allowed, and those who park for the event will be towed, the message stated.
"It's one of the dumbest damn things I've ever seen a landlord do," said Dave Lamotte, manager of the Salty Dog Surf Shop in the plaza. "It's going to hurt financially every business in that plaza. It's a big weekend. Was a big weekend."
By 4 p.m. Thursday the sign was down, but Lamotte said the event was still barred. Discussions with the plaza's representatives broke down over a demand for $5,000 from the businesses to manage the event.
Calls to representatives of the shopping center owner were not returned.
City Manager Jim Chisholm is trying to work out a compromise to keep the informal show after complaints from business people, including the owner of two restaurants not in the plaza on Atlantic Avenue.
Officially, the Turkey Run Car Show and Swap Meet was last held at Bellair Plaza in 1986.
Unofficially, the vintage cars and admiring crowds return every year, even though the Turkey Run has made its home at Daytona International Speedway since 1989.
Because Bellair is no longer an official event, there are no fees to get in or to show a car.
Salty Dog Surf Shop traditionally rings up its second-busiest week of the year, behind July 4, thanks to people who stop by to see the cars, Lamotte said. His store accepted delivery of 45 dozen t-shirts with a special design for the car show shortly before the plaza owners decided to bar the unofficial event.
"We offered to pay for extra security, Port-O-Lets, traffic control and all that," Lamotte said. "That went nowhere."
His $325 check to the city was returned.
"We'll have an officer or two up there this year, like we always do," Police Chief Mike Chitwood said. "It's a good crowd. No problems whatsoever."
Bellair Plaza owners have balked at being the unofficial site of a car show in the past. In 2000, the cars stayed after an agreement that vehicles would not be parked overnight. Four vintage vehicles were towed in 2003.
"People have been coming down for years parking their cars at the plaza," said Larry Coltelli, chief executive officer of Accumen Sales and Marketing Group, which owns the Grand Seas Resort across Atlantic Avenue from the shopping center. His company also owns Club Navigo in the plaza.
"I don't understand it, quite frankly," he said. "It's going to hurt my business, as well as other businesses, up and down the street."
So, I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts

We have been advised that the owners of Belair Plaza at 2500 N. Atlantic Avenue will allow parking
for plaza customers only in their lots during this year's Turkey Run weekend.
No organized activites will be allowed, and no vehicles can remain parked overnight.
The situation at Belair Plaza has deteriorated in recent years. There are no longer any organized
Turkey Run activities there, and no responsible party to pay the bill for increased security.
Problems will happen when hundreds of cars show up for an evening of Cruising and Burn-Outs.
In recent years, the Belair Plaza parking lot has been filled to gridlock, denying access
to plaza customers and emergency vehicles. The merchants in Belair Plaza certainly welcome
the business that the Turkey Run brings to Daytona Beach. The owner's of the Plaza however,
prefer that their property not be used for any organized events or as a venue
for sale of vehicles during the busy Thanksgiving weekend.
Please be aware of this situation. If you must go to that area to cruise, please be aware of where you park!
The website FAQ doesn't really address parking for non-particpants.
I'm all

And to the earlier question Saturday is the better day for sure. Most people leave out on sunday around lunch.

Also, it's not like it's a huge event. Parking is very limited, and pales in comparison to the Turkey Run.
I really enjoy the Bellair show, as there are cars there that were not at the speedway.
I hope the show will go on.
