Hampton Roads Photo Shoot
A month or so ago I mentioned gathering some Corvette guys/gals for a photo shoot.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/southeast/2287837-attn-ratpack-beachcombers.html
Today I contacted a photographer through a friend about doing a shoot for us. Let me know if there is any interest in this. It doesn't have to be strictly Corvettes. The more people interested the cheaper $$ for all of us.
Below is the email I sent him and his response.
I'm part of a local corvette club (non-official) and we have recently been discussing having a photographer take some pics of the cars as a group and individually.
We are looking for still images with very cool backgrounds (water, older buildings, ect) and rolling shots as a group or several groups (maybe on the freeway?).
Questions:
1) Will the photos be shot with film or with digital media?
2) If film, do we get to keep the negatives?
3) Do you have a ballpark figure $$ as to what you would charge for what I'm asking?
The car range (I'm guessing) will be between 5 and 20.
This is something that will not be done right away. I have to get with the group, post for responses on the forum, and put together a Saturday or Sunday that everyone can make time to be at the shoot. I'd say it would be within a month or so.
If this is something you'd be interested in, please give me a call so we can setup a time to meet and take a look at some of your work.
Thanks,
Tommy
His response:
Tommy,
Car clubs are one of my favorites to shoot. Im a gear head myself so cars and bikes are a favorite to shoot. I just recently helped a buddy of mine build a 400 for his 69 chevelle. LOTS of fun!
Anyways, yes, I am very interested in shooting a corvette club. I shot a muscle car club in Kenosha, Wi about a year ago and made calendars for them and everything, which turned out really good. They sold the calendars as a fund raiser for a local charity and I actually did that part of it for free. When I shoot something like this, I basically will give all the photos on a CD with no prints as it is the easiest way and makes everyone happy. All photos will be shot digitally as I have a digital SLR with a slew of canon lenses with multi flash guns and strobes.
What I like to do is get a couple group shots of all the cars with their owners using a nice wide angle lens, some rolling shots at sunset as it makes the cars POP, and then about 10-15 minutes a piece for one on one with cars. I then will edit and clean up all the shots and place them on a CD/DVD or for a little extra I could make individual CD/DVD's for each owner with a custom color label printed on the CD (not a sticker). You can get about 4-5 cars in an hour with an extra hour for a group shot/rolling shot. $225 for a two hour minimum, $400 for four hours, or $650 for all day.
Being a gear head, I like to capture all the details of the cars and you might not thing 10-15 mins is a lot of time but in 15 min I can snap off 200 photos easily! After the shoot I can also put photos together for poster prints too if needed or wanted.
Can you tell I like shooting cars/bikes yet? lol BTW, I am just returning from deployment TODAY and filling my calendar fast for the summer/fall already. Still have plenty of openings though. I will call Tuesday so we can set something up for a sit down if wanted. I do have a website I am putting together at www.kenskiphoto.com that you can view and get an idea of what I can do. It doesn't have any car shoots on there yet but will soon.
Robert.
If there are any questions or concerns, please post!
Please let me know who is interested and I'll start a head count.

I have a buddy here at work tell me I should ask him if he shoots in RAW. I was told RAW footage is the easiest to work with in photoshop.
I'll make sure this question is on the list

Sorry guys. Guess I'm going about this the wrong way. I'm trying to make sure there is enough interest in doing this before I contacted the guy again to move forward.
So far there are 5 of us willing to do this - pending dates.
He said he could get plenty shots of 4-5 cars in two hr with group rolling shots.. ect.
So as if now, if it were only the five of us participating, it would be $225/5 = $45 each.
I figure I'll let this thread go for another week to see if we get more interest. At that point I'll contact the guy and let him know how may are involved and more forward with a date.
The next free weekend I have is June 6th and anything after.
Are any of you all available June 6th? If not, we can figure another date.

Okay guys, It looks like he's avaliable for June 13th.
I'm going to post our email converstaion to clear up some questions I had for him.
Email converstaion below.
Robert,
It looks like we are a go for this on June 13th? Are you available for
this date?
I posted the event on Corvette Forum and so far we have at least 5
cars...more depending on dates. I'm quite sure we'll have at least 10
Corvettes for this.

Tommy,
That day would work perfect for me as long as the weather holds us. I
just read the thread that you sent and yes I only shoot in RAW but
deliver my photos in JPG because raw is very large and complicated. Any
changes I make to the photo does not save in the RAW file as it is
non-destructive. All saved changes are in JPG format only. This way I
can always go back and start from scratch again with the RAW. Also,
unless you have software, you can not display or edit RAW files. It is
possible to receive the RAW files but you might not be happy with the
way they look as all corrections are done VIA computer and the photos
look very pale and BLAH. In a point and shoot camera, in theory they
are shot in RAW also and then converted to JPG with corrections for you
before you even see them. DSLR's are different, they only shoot what you
see.
I will place all the photos on ONE CD/DVD for distribution but like I
mentioned earlier, I can produce individual CD/DVD's with custom color
printing directly on the CD/DVD for a small fee extra if wanted. All
CD/DVD's will have the high resolution copies of the edited RAW files. I
will also post the pictures on my website for purchased prints. I
suggest going through the company I use as they have my proper color
correction pallets and they guarantee the prints will match. If you go
to walmart, it might be close but no guarantee and also the site I use
ISN'T that much more then Walmart/walgreens.
Is there a contact # I can reach you at?
Robert...
Thanks for the info.
I have the software to work with RAW. I don't want all the photos in
RAW. I just wanted to play with a select few (of my own car) that I
really liked, and to be able to give that option to anyone else that may
want to do the same. Most of the guys won't really care about RAW (I’m assuming), just
as long as the photos are nice.
I have no issue ordering the prints from you, but I want the option to
be able to order/print anywhere. I only say this because I want the
other guys to be able to decide on their own what they want to do. Are
you still okay with this?
You can give me a call anytime at
Thanks,
Tommy,
Yes, I have NO problem with being able to print anywhere and it doesn't matter to me at all. I include with every CD/DVD a photographer release for printing. The only thing I ask is for credit if photos are submitted for magazine/commercial print. I don't charge extra like some would for this. Also a copy of a magazine if it makes a good spot! I don't put any type of watermark or other marking on the photos at all, it is ALL picture. I don't like looking at a picture and seeing the photographers name at the bottom, I think it’s TACKY. All the photos are yours to print, put on the web, do whatever it is you want to do with, I just ask for credit where they will be published.
As for RAW's, sure, I don't have a problem with that. People can shoot me a list and I can email them off or put them on a CD/DVD. No biggie.
To be honest, I'd expect to see initials or a name on the prints, but that's up to you wether you do it or not.
We are a stand up group and would have no issue in giving you the credit for anything published.
I will probably go through you for prints. I'm going to want at least 1 large print to frame in the garage, and probably quit a few 5x7 for an album. I see some of the other guys probably ordering through you as well. I just want to give them the option of doing as they choose.
I'm going to post or converstaion on the forum to clear up some question that may be asked.

Okay guys, no more conversation emails, I promise!
Just stressin a little as I want this to turn out great for everyone!! If anyone has any questions, please let me know and I'll pass them along and let you know.
On a side note....this is the first thing I've ever organized....so I guess we could say I'm not a virgin anymore.
