Default Getting through Atlanta...

I've got a cross country trip coming up that will take me from Charlotte, NC to Mobile via Atlanta on I-85.

Is there a "best" route that will keep me out of the major Altanta traffic but allow me to pick I-85 back up on the south side of town?

And when are the "rush hours" there?

Any guidance would be great!

No route through or around Atlanta is ever good. But you can time it. Shoot through Atlanta anytime after 9am and before 4pm and you'll pretty much get through with no problem. Anytime after about 7pm is good too.

Stay on 85 though. I would not bother with the 285 loop. All the 18 wheelers HAVE to take the loop in General and that adds a lot of truck traffic and possible delays.

I'm through Atlanta quite a bit and even in rush hour it's not so bad unless there is a wreck then all bets are off.

Actually it's I-85 to I-65 in Montgomery then on to Mobile or vice versa...

Good advice from others to avoid Atlanta from about 7:00 AM to after 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Although you just never know what can happen around here.

----> WSB 750 AM radio gives decent traffic reports during the rush hour periods.
---->You can also dial 511 from your cell and get traffic info in the Atlanta area.
---->You might want to check the Georgia Navigator web site for some heads up info before you get to the Atlanta area:

Hope this helps!!!!

Your car in DC??? Wow!!! A city for sled dogs these days - have good friends in San Antonio - lived there a million years ago - the Alamo was still used as a fort!! Was there in October and the city is fantastic.
