Moving from NY to Florida in April and I have a question with respect to plates and registration (did do a search but came up empty). In NY, we have a "vintage" plate option and registration. For example, my 69 has correct, original period plates. My registration is for one year as opposed to the standard two. Does Florida offer anything like this?

I would be interested in knowing this also, as I will be moving down there as well from NY (L.I.). We will be moving to the Sarasota area. Where are you going? Looking forward to enjoying the cars year round. This winter can't end soon enough.

I couldn't agree more! Moving down to the east coast, about 45 min north of West Palm (Port St Lucie). As far as the plates, I really like the vintage plates I have and feel it adds so much to the whole car.
There's also a "Custom Vehicle" plate that is red in color that would look good on a red car. With that tag you can get a personalized 5 letter/number vanity plate:
And, below is a link to all the specialty plates that you can get (branches of military, universities, sports teams, environmental, etc., etc.). Scroll down to see that "custom vehicle" tag, as well as the "street rod" tag which is also red:

Bob - did some further checking and found the proper form for the tags. Follow up question is this. The form says the fee for an antique plate is $67.45. Does that mean the 'vette is not subject to the $400 charge I keep hearing about?

Looks like you will be directly across the state from me. I currently have NY Y.O.M. plates on my 67 Vette and 73 Road Runner. Had those plates for a long time. I wonder if I could get away with keeping the NY plate on the front and FL plate on rear .

BEZ06, great info. Thanks .
Take a look at the Villages Car Club link on BE's email and I believe you will see that any other current (I guess it mean active) tag can not be used.
Just re-read the information Bob sent - I believe it's the "Authenticated" plate I want.
I don't know what the $400 you mentioned is. You will probably have some extra $$$ for the initial registration, but once that's done I think the FL annual registration is fairly low compared to many other states.
My 2006 and 2009 Vettes are both the same. You do your annual (or 2 year) registration renewal just before your birth month every year. My birthday is March, so I'm just getting ready to send in my renewal for those 2 cars.
Both the Vettes each are $93.35 for one year, or $186 each for 2 year renewals - I've read that places like Kalifornia are quite a bit higher!!
And, there's no state income tax down here!!!

There's no front plate in FL, so you could probably run the NY plate up front, but I like not needing to mount a tag up front at all!! I'd mount them on the wall in the garage!
It cost me about $38/yr for the 77 vette. Initial hit for new Fl registration may be steep though. I don't remember what I paid on my other vehicles when I moved down from L.I. NY.(1989) The $400 you mentioned may be the total cost for new registration/plates. It gets more expensive here since there is no state tax to say. Its made up in other ways. Enjoy the heat!, loose the snow shovel & ice scraper or just mount them to a plaque as a reminder .

At one time it seemed quite common to see northern transplants keep the front tag from their former state on the front of the car. Doesn't seem to happen very often any more.
For Florida registration you have a title fee, a plate fee, a registration fee, and a new wheels fee. These add up to be around $400. The antique plates/ registration is not quite as steep. But can still be costly. The heavy cost is only incurred when you first register in Florida, after that you only pay your registration renewal fees, which expire on your birthday every year.
Break down f fees are typically this:
title fee: $75-$99
Plate fee: $28-$50
registration: $70-$85
New Wheels: $225
Also if you want your title same day its an extra $10, and you'll also have another $10 fee converting a NY title to a FL title.
Car looks better clean of stickers and front plate.
Found a nice, clean 68 - 69 plate up at Classic Dream Cars in Orlando. Hoping to have my car down here in a few weeks - once here I can start the process.

Just an FYI...Heacock said I would need to provide proof that the NY plates were turned in before they would issue insurance down here. Problem of course because there was no way I was turning in my vintage plates. Called NY DMV and here is the solution. There is a form (they are sending it to me) which shows that the plates are now inactive. In essence, the plates have been returned on paper. DMV says this will satisfy Heacock.

Thanks, good info. When you get the form, if you don't mind, could you let me know what the DMV form # is?
