LT Headers in CA?
Ive been wanting to get LT headers for my C4 but have not done it because Im hearing its not legal. I dont want to screw around with CA emissions and am not willing to take a chance with a "Ive heard" or "This dude at this show had it" to make the decision to make the change. I see lots of peeps out there with catless cars and whatnot and frankly, I frown on it and wish they would be as careless with cops around as they were with me.
Is there a set up that is CA legal? with CARV stamps on them?

Not sure about the C4, but there is nothing but shorties for the C5. This really sucks, we can't put headers on America's best in CA.
I'm thinking of doing it anyway, I've seen several cars with headers and they are not that noticable from the engine bay. I know the smog guy is not going to look under the car, so unless they see something from up top that draws their attention, I think I could get away with it.
Funny thing is that the car will probably have lower emissions with headers as it will run more efficiently.
California Air Research Board is f'd up IMHO

I'm running Hooker long-tubes on my '85. They have a CARB EO number. Just passed smog-only test in October. They did question the headers, I gave them the number. As long as you keep the cats, should be no problem. (They didn't say anything about the very "lumpy" cam!)

Perfusion has EM longtubes on his 96 LT4. I'm waiting for him to go thru smog before I take the plunge. I have JBA shorties on my work bench, but I'm contemplating whether or not to sell them.

I should mention that I think these are actually Hedmans (not Hookers per my original post) but I'm not completely sure. In any case, if you can't convince them with facts, dazzle them with BS...
You can check for street-legal mods on the CARB website at http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...s/amquery.php; listbox at the bottom of the page will allow you to select "Exhaust System/Exhaust Modification."
The EO number I gave them was D-167-4, for 1982-1992 GM vehicles equipped with 305-454 CID fuel-injected engines.

Exempted parts are add-on or modified parts that have undergone an ARB engineering evaluation. If the part or modification is shown to not increase vehicle emissions, it is granted an exemption to emission control system anti-tampering laws. This exemption is called an Executive Order (EO) and allows the modification to be installed on specific emission controlled vehicles. Every Executive Order part or modification has an assigned number that can be verified by Smog Check stations, BAR Referee stations, or by the ARB.

Steve, that's exactly the number I was going to use in the absence of a specific section for the Vette. Good call!

I think if we talk to the vendors and create a large enough list of interested members, they would take it upon themselves to get the certification to be legal.

Nevermind. That trick would never work around here, because if you have ANYTHING aftermarket, they match the part # ON the part, with the part # listed on the E.O. Exemption. No number, no smog. The guys around here are dicks.

Does your car have precats? If so, installing headers is a double-whammy risk (and an expensive one to fix if you get caught). Still, it would benefit us all if the guniea pig gets by and let's us in on his tricks!

Unfortunately according to the letter of the law, there just is no LT legal in Cali for our cars. You can try to baffle them with BS with that catchall EO above, but the part numbers are all different........
