Texas linked together the registration and inspection. You have to pass inspection to get a registration sticker. There is no longer an inspection sticker.

Next will be the linking of registration with insurance. No registration = no insurance.

If you live in the major metropolitan areas of Texas your car will still have to pass an emissions test, so basically your saving $7 a year for someone to check your tires and whipper blades.

Should be the other way around though, no insurance = no registration too many uninsured out there driving.

Ummm, already the "other way around" in Texas.

You cannot register a vehicle in Texas without presenting proof of liability insurance.

Hopefully they implemented the database so people can't get insurance for registration than just cancel. I'm glad they're changing this. Every year is a hassle when most states do it bi-annually. The number of inspection stations seems to decrease every year so it's a given I'm going to spend 1-1.5 hrs getting a car inspected. Not too keen on having a inspection kid driving my car for "safety" check either.

Exactly. I personally can't get too excited about saving $7.

Agreed, I don't want some grease monkey in my car getting it dirty, toasting the clutch, or having to worry they will hit the splitter on something.

Alright, I will save $28 a year. That's until they decide they lost revenue, and just raise the vehicle registration by $7. The state changed the law a while back and now let's the county decide how much of a "local fee" they can charge for vehicle registration. The normal amount is $10.

Bexar County (San Antonio) raised the fee, so it's $20 a vehicle.

Certain counties are permitted to assess an additional fee for transportation not to exceed $20 to fund long-term transportation projects in the county.

I wonder how the shops feel about this. On one hand the inspections will be simpler and quicker allowing them to do more per hour but they'll make less per inspection?

For me, the amount I pay for inspection went down, but my registration went up. They just shifted the money from one side to the other.

Oklahoma has not had a vehicle inspection for years. The inspection station contractors said they were loosing money so away it went. You do have to have proof of insurance for your annual vehicle registration.
