Texas: Renewing "Antique Vehicle" registration?
Some years ago I switched my '71 over to "antique vehicle" at the DMV since it's much cheaper and no inspections.
The plate I got says it expires this month.
I haven't received anything from the DMV in the mail. I was expecting a renewal notice with instructions, but alas, nothing.
Before going to the DMV and standing in line for an hour; does anyone know what the renewal process is? Just go to the DMV and say I want another plate? What do I need to bring with me? Proof of insurance I guess. But do I need to fill out some form (I'd like to have that done beforehand if so).
Google came up empty when I searched, just a bunch of spam sites offering to renew online for a fee. Can't do that anyway since I need a new plate.

zwede,
I just did mine. Go to www.texas.gov. Near the middle of the home page there is a tab for "Popular Searches"...Click on Vehicle Registration Renewal...That will take you to the next page that asks for the license plate number and last four digits of the VIN...You can complete the process and pay online...They will mail you new plates or a new sticker......

Thanks, but no luck:
Is yours registered as an antique vehicle or just regular registration?
Your Vehicle Does Not Qualify for Online Registration Renewal. Contact Your Local County Tax Assessor-Collector's Office or the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles at 512-465-3000 or toll-free 1-888-DMVGOTX(368-4689) for Further Assistance.

You will need a basic safety inspection beforehand - cost $7.50, and insurance. Take these and the vehicle information (VIN, tag#, etc.) to the local county tax office and wait in the regular license tag renewal line.

Just did mine. Just go down to the county tax office with your insurance card. It's now $64 for 5 years. There is no inspection. Never was. Why would you need a new tag? They'll just give you a new sticker, or in my case a sticker for the little metal tag I have.
I've never gone to the DMV for a tag renewal.

Are you running modern "Antique Vehicle" designated plates or original 1971 plates? The original 1971 plates can qualify for the above mentioned five (5) year time period with no inspection....Parade, Display, Car Club Use. I believe regular "Antique Vehicle" plates need to be renewed every year.
Looks like you're going to make a trip to the DMV!......

Like this on a set of original 1964 plates....03/13...Renewed in March 2013 until 03/18...And just renewed last week until 03/23...Five years at at time...No state inspection required...$65 to $75 fee for five years depending on your county...

You don't go to the DMV. You go to your tax office, just like you do for regular tags.
Regular antique tags are good for 5 years just like my '72 approved tags.
Also, all antique tags expire in 3/23, whether you renew this month, or get one 3 years from now.

Also, you do not have to use the sticker they issue. I just put the paperwork and sticker in my glove box.

I finally got a renewal notice in the mail today.
Oddly enough it says I need an inspection to renew, but the inspection fee is $0... our government at work, I guess?
It does state I have an antique plate that will expire March 2023 after renewal. I'll head down to the tax office then and hope the stuff about needing an inspection is wrong.
I have the "antique vehicle" plate the state issued, not a period plate.

Just got back from the tax office. The "inspection required" message on the renewal notice is an error (confirmed by the clerk). No inspection is needed.
They wanted another filled out VTR-54 form (same form as is used to get the antique plates to begin with). They didn't ask for proof of insurance.
I currently have a state issued plate with the expiration printed on it. They now do stickers that go on the plate instead and will mail me a new plate.
Total fee (Collin county) was $66.25 for 5 years.
Line was short and moved fast. Whole thing took 15 minutes.

I renewed mine this year. Online renewal was not allowed. I mailed in the renewal form with payment, $66.25. As always, inspection is not required. This time I got a 3/23 plate sticker in the mail followed by a new plate. I miss the old style plate.

Well, I must have wasted some time. My renewal form came in the mail and it said it needed a safety inspection. I took it to an inspection plate and they gave me the form (no charge) and I mailed it in with the 65 bucks and got my renewal sticker. I have a little metal tab they gave me at the DMV the first time I registered the car that the stickers goes on. I have an old 1972 license plate on my car.

How long does it take to get the new plate? 2 weeks ago, I went to the tax off here in Midland Co. also and got paperwork with the little reflective 3/23 tag. I assume a new plate is on the way and that I dont put the new stickers on the old plate?

My new plate arrived about 10 days or so after the 3/23 reflective sticker arrived. I had put the sticker on my old plate and had to remove it and put it on the new plate. I super heated the sticker with a hair dryer to get it off in one piece. I have no idea why the plate and sticker don’t come together in one package. Hope this helps.

I think so. Funny, I forgot that my stickers came with a 30 day temporary paper plate also. Man, it was confusing to me. But yes, your new metal plate should arrive within about two weeks give or take a few days.
