Since the old thread on Newman Car Creations was locked, I started another to tell my Paul Newman story.
I met Paul at Corvettes@Carlisle back in 1999 (I think) and I talked with him extensively about how he converted the old frames to accept C4 suspension. I planned to send my wife’s 62 frame out to CA for the conversion and Paul told me the shipping was going to be $350, each way, so the total cost for the conversion was going to be around $5700. I took my frame to the Yellow Freight (recommended by Paul) terminal in Greensboro, NC and asked them what the shipping charges would be to CA. I was told that they could not give me the cost until the frame reached their terminal in St. Louis, and I told them I was not going to ship it until I knew exactly what the cost would be. After a few phone calls the Yellow Freight guy told me that it would be $1200, each way. I told him thanks, but no thanks. I called Paul when I got home and told him my story and he told me that “Yes, the freight company changed their classification for frames and that I have another client with a frame sitting in St. Louis waiting to see if he wants to pay the increased costs.”
For the $7400 I saved I bought a new TIG welder and made my own conversion.
Thats thw way i would have felt about also. Sounded way out there . Giving a company a signed blank check, that was insulting your common sense at the least.
I don't understand what the problem is. So Newman Car Creations doesn't control what Yellow Freight charges to ship uncommon freight?
I've gotten wildly different quotes for freight from trucking companies. Sometimes it is too cheap to believe and other times it is insanely expensive. I'm convinced they have a dart board they use to determine rates.
I had a buddy ship an engine through UPS and paid a reasonable rate. They actually came back some time later and charged him more because the first amount wasn’t right for some reason. I didn’t think it was legal but he got hosed for the difference. I’m wondering if many shippers have some buried legalese in their “agreements.”
When large flatscreen TVs first started to become widely available I read many threads where someone shipped one, bought full insurance from the carrier, and it arrived damaged. They then went to file a claim and the carrier declined to pay based on their policies. So even though they accepted payment for the insurance, they would not pay.
When it comes to oneself and a large corporation you're at a huge disadvantage. They have the lawyers. We can hire a lawyer, but legal bills that are multiples over the disputed amount makes "going legal" a "you lose no matter what" proposition.
Going back on OT, I still don't see why Newman Car Creations is named in this thread. They haven't done anything wrong and the changed rates for shipping frames will do nothing but cost them business.
Hello, I have a 78 and have been doing somewhat of a custom restoration. I have place an LS3 7.0l in the frame, however I am wanting to bring the exhaust out like the original early model Stingray. I have found some possible header applications, one would require a lot of excessive bending to bring it out as desired. But one set I have found claims to work on the Newman chassis. So, what I would like to know is if there is a way to find the dimensions, especially from the front end to see if the set will fit, or be able to be used. Any Help??
