Default Beware Cray Wheels

Two years ago after losing the second OEM rear wheel on my GS to cracks I bought a set of Cray Spyder flow-forged wheels hoping to eliminate the problem. Unfortunately, I recently discovered that one of my rear wheels was leaking due to THREE cracks. The other wheel was not leaking but already had one crack.

Cray claims to guarantee their wheels if no other damage but they have refused to do so. The wheel with one crack was slightly out of round so I did not expect Cray to replace it. However, the wheel with THREE cracks was otherwise perfect but Cray will not replace it.

Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed with Cray and will not buy another product from them.

PS. My car is a 2017 Grand Sport. It is a daily driver and has not been tracked or auto-crossed or otherwise abused.

What is their written warranty? Two years as a daily driver seems like a long time/lot of miles.

Cray are also far heavier than the factory wheels if I remember correctly.

Our Limited Warranty Promise

To the fullest extent recognized by the laws of the state where the wheel was purchased, Cray Corvette issues this limited warranty to define the rights of the purchaser, and limit Cray Corvette liability, with regard to warranty claims.

Cray Corvette warrants that our wheels will be free from structural failure under normal and intended use for as long as the original retail purchaser owns the product. Customers are specifically directed to the Cray Corvette Consumer Information and WTC Aftermarket Wheel Installation Guidelines, supplied with the wheel. Failure to comply with these instructions shall void this warranty.

Except as specifically set forth below, Cray Corvette warrants that products manufactured will be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal intended use for a period of one year from retail purchase.
  • Cray Corvette warrants that chrome and painted aluminum finishes will be free from peeling or lifting on the face of the wheel for a period of one year.
  • Cray Corvette warrants that PVD finishes will be free from peeling or lifting on the face of the wheel for a period of two years.
  • Polished aluminum wheels, that have not been clear coated, oxidize. They require regular maintenance. Polished aluminum finishes are not covered under warranty.
  • Excluding surface rust or corrosion, Wheel Pros warrants the paint and plating on steel wheels for a period of 90 days.
  • In no event shall Cray Corvette be liable for any special, incidental or consequential damages.
  • This warrant is not applicable if:
    1. Damage occurred due to failure to follow completely the instructions provided in the Cray Corvette Consumer Information and WTC Aftermarket Wheel Installation Guidelines;
    2. Corrosion or damage occurred due to improper maintenance;
    3. Damage or structural failure occurs as a result of an accident or road conditions;
    4. Damage or structural failure occurs as a result of improper use of the vehicle including, but not limited to, on and off-road racing.
This limited warranty is the sole express warranty given and is in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, whether oral or written. All implied warranties, including, without limitation, warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, are hereby disclaimed.

Cray Corvette products are not designed to be used with any accessories or adapters other than those supplied and/or approved in writing by Cray Corvette. Use of any accessory or adapter not manufactured by Cray Corvette voids this warranty.

To initiate a warranty claim, the purchaser shall return the wheel for visual inspection to the retail or wholesale dealer from whom the product was originally purchased; along with a copy of the original sales receipt. “Should the dealer determine that the wheel has failed to perform as expected under this warranty the wheel will be repaired or replaced at the sole and absolute discretion of the dealer. Such repair or replacement shall not include the cost of removal, shipping, installation or reinstallation of the wheel.

This warranty expires upon transfer of title of any products by the original retail purchaser.

IMPORTANT: If returned products are found ineligible for warranty coverage, the product will be returned to the sender, without repair or replacement, at the sender’s expense."

Sorry to hear about your wheels, especially after dealing with the OEM crap. My new OEM GM ZR1 wheels are also flow forged and I'm beginning to wonder if the 12" barrel is just too wide for the power. 335s sure do look good and feel great in the twisties. Good luck with the new set.

I would think the bold, red italic part is all OP needs. Might cost a little to ship the wheel back but if it's failed with no other defects then sounds like Cray owes him one new wheel (only because he mentioned the other is out of round and assumes it isn't covered).

What's the term "barrel" mean? I just installed 4 Cray "Machined with Black background", Hell I never read a warranty, it's a piece of crap these days.
So I guess for my $ 2,500 my wheels will start to rust in 1 year? 2017 GS SE, original owner and wheels, 50K miles. We should start our own forge, trainees, etc.

My wheel shop dealt directly with Cray and was willing to send in the unbent wheel. They apparently told my shop they would not even look at it.

I have now ordered some Apex wheels that are fully forged and lighter weight than either of the other wheels I've had. Apex gets very good reviews online and the shop I use has been impressed with them on cars used for track and autocross. Also reasonably priced for fully-forged wheels. Here's hoping.

It appears that as long as you don't use the wheels on-road or off-road, you're covered.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Cray. I am going to move this to Transactions Feedback where other members can review your experience with the warranty on the wheels.

wheels should last a lifetime. They are not a wear item lol. I dont care if it’s an oem, forged, flow forged, whatever. Any wheel that cracks under daily driving use is defective. Maybe the material was bad. Possibly the machining process. Or the design. But wheels do not fail unless they are crap.
OP hopefully you are happy with your new apex wheels and don’t have any problems like this. They seem to have a lot of happy customers!

I have two sets of Cray wheels, winter and summer. Have had them for last 4 or 5 years, and swap them semi-annually with no issues to date. My OEM wheels cracked.
