Got me a radio....
It's supposed to be out of a 70 and I understand the color on the numbers is different for a 72....But it's close enough for me. The guy said it worked when he took it out....It doesn't have the amp/(whatever it is called) with it but I'm hoping there is still one in my car. If anyone can tell me what year this is I would appreciate it.

I can't help with the model date.........I bought one exactly like it from a Forum member to finish the interior of my '68 (close enough for me also)

From what I have found so far I think this is from a 75, is a AM/FM stereo and the Y in the model number is really a V....Sure looks like a Y to me, but there is no Delco model with a Y in the model number.

I think the amp was for the stereo am/fm only, not the regular am/fm radio which I think you have. It would have the word stereo that would light up on the upper right side corner.

Hi Wee,
I agree that's a stereo version of the 2 am/fm radios that were available.
The little dot light to the right of the slide indicates that. 72+ radios had that light dot indicator but I don't recognize those ***** as being 72 ***** which were soft black vinyl so it could well be the 75 you think it might be.
I believe there are 2 additional parts to the system… the convector that the regular am/fm radio had and an additional unit that stereo radios had.
Regards,
Alan
I think these are the typical components for the stereo radio (plus the speakers).

51YFM1 identifies the radio. I Googled it and got stereo. The green-yellow-blue wire bundle should run to the add on stereo unit.

Can anyone point me to where under the dash each of these pieces are located....? Anyway to check out if the radio works without these pieces....?
I know the ***** are not right for a "72 but I hate the rubber black ones so I would replace those even if they were right.

Only picture I could find
The small piece is what I removed when I switched to the AM/FM Stereo in my '72. I am pretty sure all this is behind and above the so-called glove box; looks like I had to remove the vent shaft also. Hope this helps...

Speaker wires come from the radio head. The signal wires run to the CONVECTOR (not converter) and then come back to the head unit. The 'convector' was merely a single transistor power stage of amplification...for each channel. One transistor convector for mono unit; two transistor convector for the stereo radio.
The radio head is from a '75 car. It's convector should be the same as those from '73-76. If you need a stereo convector, you can sometimes find them on eBay.

Just an update on the install progress....
I found out my car came with a mono radio and the convector was still behind the dash panel....I used it to check the new radio and it worked....So now I had to find a stereo convector....They are hard to find and not cheap....Got one off eBay with the connection that was missing from my radio for $75. I added some kick panels that had speakers (mine were cracked) and some new dash speakers (wired in serial) I have about $150 in this little project.
Here are a few pics....I'm almost finished.
Everything tore out...
Parts on the counter top...
Radio, shifter console and kick panels in....

Suggestion
If you are not aware of this, use 10ohm speakers, the 4 ohm will work initially but burn up something.
Hooked up my 68 radio after who knows how long and the first song out was "Day Tripper", gotta say it gave me some goose bumps! Jimi is also likely hiding in that box somewhere too, ha!
By the way, if you are concerned about looks for originality, just find and install some correct radio ***** for your year.

New 4 ohm speakers in the dash AND in kickpanel, wired in SERIES, will provide 8 ohm total impedance...a good match for the 10 ohm output impedence of the amp. I've done it and sound quality is good (at least, as good as a 70's Delco radio head will do ), good volume and sound dispersion, and no distortion. No problem when turned up to full volume.
You have a 1975 Delco stereo radio head. You need the double transistor 'convector' amp unit and the wiring leads to it from the radio (you can rig them up if necessary...but it would be better to have the correct harness).
If you do not add speakers in the kickpanels or rear compartment (and wire them in series with dash speakers), you will need to buy dash speakers with 8 ohm or 10 ohm impedence so they will match with the radio head impedence.

Yep.....4 ohm speakers wired in serial....2 on each side, kick panels and dash....Stereo convector as well. The Vette fought me the whole way but I kept my cool and just stayed focused. All turned out well.
I guess my next project will be rear carpet and getting the compartment doors back in good shape.
