Let’s say this right up front. Do NOT buy cars as investments. There are myriad better investment options if you only care about the largest financial return on your investment. Buy cars that you LOVE. That way no matter if the value of the car goes up or down, you are still a winner. Of course, that being said, it is sure nice when you can drive something you love and have it increase in value. As it turns out the C5 Corvette Z06 might just be one of those vehicles. The Hagerty Bull Market 2023 list just came out and the 2001 – 2004 Corvette Z06 is on it.
Each year Hagerty selects ten cars (and one motorcycle) that it feels has the greatest potential to increase in value. Some of the cars are quite expensive, such as the Lamborghini Murcielago that is also on the Hagerty Bull Market list this year. But many are quite affordable. And the C5 Z06 is certainly on the more affordable side of the equation. You can buy a good example today for about 25 percent of what a new C8 Z06 will cost you. Assuming you can even get a C8 Z06 and not pay a six-figure markup on it. We have known for a while that the C5 Z06 represented great value. But now that this video hit the Hagerty YouTube channel, the word is out. So, if you have been on the fence, you might want to snap one up soon.

So why is the C5 Z06 so special? Let us count the ways. The C5 Z06 is not for just winning stoplight races. Although it will win plenty as it hits 60 mph in just 4 seconds flat. But this car can also hold its own around a road course. And while the C8 Z06 makes a spine-tingling noise thanks to the flat-plane crank LT6. The titanium exhaust equipped C5 Z06 is no slouch. It sounds incredible. And unlike the C8 generation, the C5 Z06 will let you shift your own gears via a 6-speed manual transmission. The older car is also a whopping 600 pounds lighter than the newest iteration.

We understand that everyone gets obsessed with numbers. 0 to 60 in 4.0 seconds might not sound all that fast anymore. But in the real world do you really need more? The new Z06 is a rocket ship but in reality, where are you using all that speed and power? Stand on the gas for more than a couple seconds and you risk not just a speeding ticket but maybe a little jail time. The C5 Z06 has the perfect amount of speed. It is quick enough to feel legitimately quick. But you can enjoy the experience of accelerating a little bit longer. Savor the moment. And it will top out over 170 mph. Slower than the C8 for sure, but where exactly are you reaching that speed?

As we said at the outset you should buy the C5 Z06 because you love it, not because it will be worth more money at some future date. There are no promises of that happening. And you also have to factor in running costs such as insurance, fuel and maintenance. But we do agree with Hagerty that the C5 Z06 looks like an incredible bargain right now, and it would not surprise us to see these get more expensive soon. And even if they don’t, they will not likely depreciate much, if at all. And in the meantime, you get to drive one hell of a sportscar.
