Currently no alarm. But generally I use DEI. Sometimes Clifford...which is now owned by DEI. You name it I have had it. Last alarm was DEI remote start, all four windows up and down, pager, all the sensors, and activated my train horn.

I have installed over 3000 alarms. Mostly DEI and I have been very happy with all of their products.

Viper 790. Its a pager alarm. But since it's illegal to take out someone who is robbing you sniper style, it's pretty useless.

what is your opinion on some of the BEST alarms. Currently I have an 85 vette and put a fortune into, I want to have an alarm that is somewhat "top of the line" how much and what model is it, money will not be an issue...I don't want something that will be spliced into every wire in the car, I've had bad experience before with another car, I don't want no wild accesories like remote start and heater/ac...I have a 4+3. thanks

well, I would suggest a DEI / Viper RSX 3.5 or 3.0 .. Both have all the bells and whistle options that you can possibly imagine, and both have extremely long range transmitters for the little LCD screen remote keypads that show you what sensor is being tripped on your vehicle, when it's being ganked by your local boy scout troupe. Kinda neat options but it depends on how much 'wow' factor you want in an alarm. It has all the remote start stuff as a option purchased seperately, and all kinds of detection modules as high priced addons.

If you want your car to have all the sensors that a high end alarm has, your car's electrical system will be have to be hacked on.

There is an alternative. Alpine makes a 8080 and up series of Alarms that has an adjustable dopplar-shift radar sensor in it that you can expand the amount of feet around your car that motion can be detected and subsequently a warning will sound, or a outright alarm will go crazy. It was meant for convertables were it was pointless to put pin switches on the alarm circuit. I've installed these alarms from alpine about 8 times, and they're pretty sturdy, and the dopplar shift technology doesnt false alarm too much, unless it rains really really hard outside, and the alarm senses the density of the water outside as an alarm state, and gives off warning 'chrips'.

But really, any cheap alarm with a negative ground trigger on it, with attached to one of the triggers on the alarm, you purchase one of these dopplar shift sensors from Radioshack and tune it to your alarm state sensativity wishes. That way, no door wires will have to be hacked on, no dome light trigger sensor is needed, and only really things you need to hack into is a relay for the headlights to flash, and thats it. An affordable yet secure way to put an alarm on your ride.

hope ive helped.

There are two things to shop for in this market. One is an alarm system. Any monkey can install an alarm system as snoopdan has pointed out. The other is a security system..now that is a different animal.

An alarm system no matter what the cost or quality of the product is just an expensive noise maker. It will malfuction and activate when it thuders, a big truck drives by, and or when the wind blows. An alarm system will hack up your cars electrical system. Most importantly an alarm system will fail you when it is needed most.

A security system is the complete opposite. It works properly all the time. It activates at only an attempted intrusion. It is melded with your factory electrical system so there is no apperance of addition.

Now technically any product on the market can be either an alarm or a security system. The differance is in the installation. You can spend all sorts of money on product, if it is not installed properly it is worth squat. First decide on the features you want and level of security. Then decide on a product that is going to give you those features. Then shop installers that sell and service that product. The installer is the key to a security system. Again without the right installer you are wasting your money.

I guess really what I was trying to get at is that you can buy any alarm you want, but its not going to do much more than make a bunch of noise, and draw SOME attention to your car. Now I do dig the RSX paging system when your alarm is triggered. At least then, if you're paranoid enough about your ride, you can at least go to a window if you are parked near one, and make sure that you're not getting robbed. But they still false trigger. Its the nature of the product.

Now I know this is a plain, argument inducing statement, but if someone is going to jack your car, no matter what you do, its gonna get jacked. Advanced security system or alarm system or whatever you want to call it isnt going to matter. Your alarm will be going off while the theif waves at you and gets in and drives off.

Would it be easy to remove that useless factory alarm? when that thing goes off, you'd think the car was talking to old ladies crossing the road or something.

I have the exact alarm....and feel the same way

Also, Snoopdan...it is very true what you said. If someone wants your car enough, nothing will stop them. However, the best thing you can do is try and draw as much attention to your car as possible. Currently I have Police Strobes in my car for show reasons, but I also wired them up to go off with my alarm. When my alarm goes off, everyone around will stare at it because the strobes are incredibly bright. Granted, as you said, if robbers want it enough this won't matter, but for the average thief it will dissuade them.

I have the Autopage alarm in my Vette (I think the 8500, I'm to lazy right now and go look). I have Clifford Alarms in the truck(autopage pager) and red Talon(Alpine pager) and a Excaliber system in the white Talon. I like them all but the Vette's is the best, built in pager and display. I too have police stobes, 2 red behind the brake covers, 2 white behind the clear part of the front turnsignals, and 2 blue in the side ducts. Between them, the horn, and siren it WILL be noticed.

Installation expertise is a MUST. The biggest mistake I see is the sensors are set too high causing false alarms which WILL ****-off your neighbors and others. Some people brag that their alarm will go off if you touch their car. They are stupid IMO, the purpose of a normal alarm is to prevent theft, not go off anytime someone farts near the car. I will admidt though, I do not want people near my Vette, period! Hence, the my Vette's prox is set up so anyone within a foot or so of the car will get a warning beep, get closer than that and they will chit cause the alarm will go full bore.

My old 1994 Alpine 8040 still works to this day. I put it on my nova, and it has the proximity sensor (dopplar shift sensor) on it, with all the warning zones that you can adjust. I can arm/disarm the alarm from 3 football fields away (no buildings in the way). Of course, I have to use the super-secret keypad chin trick

as far as an attention getter, I hooked up the light flash relay to the underbody neon on my Fiat, when the alpine was in it. Talk about a light show....heh heh

I really like the use of strobes, not many rides have them hooked up to alarms yet, so its a fairly new enough to get attention. Or at least get some people rubbernecking past your car, thinking it was in an accident

And the thieves will have the added bonus of clearing traffic as they make off with your car.

Seriously though..hooking up strobes to the alarm is a great idea. Throw in a police siren and you'll have a crowd of onlookers trying to find the body... At the very least you'll probably get a good eye-witness description of whodunnit.

As ashamed as I am of my old Explorer (which had just an insane amount of neon's, LEDs and Strobes) when that alarm would go off...
I had (1)109db Mini Piezo Siren mounted up top in my trunk. I had (2) 115db 2" Piezo Siren's mounted behind my sub box. I had (1) 120db Stock Alarm horn. I had (1) 118db Truck Horn under hood. I had (1) 140db Siren also.

Combine all that together and you had a car that would light up the entire block, and wake it up too!

Well hey, it must be really useful to start your car 3/4 a mile away. ...Right?

That thing must have horrible battery life, with that kind of transmit power.
