Default My Face Hurts

I can't stop smiling
I test drove my budget bose upgrade. WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I haven't had a decent sound system for over 15 years. I am truley happy with the choices i made. Here is what i bought.
Sony CDX-m8805 head $200 CAD boxing day sale, new
Sony XM-475GSX amp $82 US delivered, ebay used
Infinity 6 1/2'' 6000 components $80 US delivered,ebay new
Two JL 8W04's $120 US delivered, ebay like new
50 sq. ft. B-Quiet deadener $79 US delivered, ebay new
I am so glad i ordered some deadener as everything vibrated like mad. I still have to apply all the deadener and pinpoint where i want the tweeters but all in all the project is near completion.
Thanks to all that replied to all my questions. I will post pics when i am completely finished.
Cheers
Dan

I put my tweeters in the door pull area. I still have to clean up out in the garage so I haven't taken any pics yet, but will try to get it done tomorrow and show you the location I chose, it looks sweet.

And I can't believe how GOOD it sounds either.

Please do post pics
I am willing to cut holes in the door panels for the tweeters if thats where they sound best. I didn't try any location changes last night as i just finished all the wiring and it was dinner and dark. At least now i can start putting some of the car back together

I have the 5000 reference components. I used a roto-zip tool to cut the circle after I traced around the "eyeball" mounts. It was easy to do and sounds good there.

I bet those swivel mounts help a WHOLE lot with imaging. Looks good.

I do have a question, did you drill holes right thru the back hatch wall to mount that amp? Or just to the carpeting only. I know that carpeting can be pretty stiff since it has that plastic bonded to it. i was just wondering..

I am still waiting for my damn CDT Ef-61's to come in....they're a few days late in shipping I drove around my car today for a couple of hours and I wanted to kick in my door speakers after a while.

Im eagerly waiting my CDT's to come in, I got a set of them with the 560 xovers for $150 With warranty! Some folks hooked me up at the sounddomain forum. I constantly find good deals over there, since those guys change componants and subs like normal people change clothes....so they're always getting rid of their old stuff, even if its only a few weeks old. The CDT's I bought are 2005 models, not too shabby!!

I played with the stereo a little more today The head unit has something called dynamic soundstage organizer. It has three settings and an off. Each setting seems to move the stage up higher so i was able to get a good sound where ever i put the tweeters. I wont be 100% sure where till i kill all the vibration. I scared the shet out of me when i played Flood by Tool I had i cranked My head is still spinning. Gotta love subs and Tool

The mounts definately help with the imaging. I first set the tweets up on a long lead and moved them around to the different areas I felt I could easily mount them, and wasn't satisfied with anything but having them on the door. I then noticed that the door panel in that area has enough space to mount them The mounts are about 1 1/4" deep so it would have been hard to put them anywhere else.

For the amp, I put a piece of wood behind the carpet and mounted the amp to that, hopefully that will hold the amp in place. I was going to mount it right to the car, but was leery of the gas tank being right behind there, and too lazy to get under the car and look to see how much space I have, lol.

I've got the x-over for the doors set at 90hz and the components sound very good. With all the damper I've got on the door, it doesn't rattle one bit, I'm very happy with that. I'm still waiting on the 6 1/2 rear coaxials to come in (freaking ebayers) and I think I'll run them with a little less gain to bring the stage back up front. As it sits right now, the fronts are getting 150w and it gets very loud, won't have a problem hearing the stereo over the exhaust now

This will be the cheapest stereo I've ever put in a car, and I'm happy with it. I only have $500 in it now, and I'll probably add a bass tube or something similar for a little thump in the near future, for now, I'm just happy to have something besides the blose.

Congratulations Agent86 on your low budget/excellent sounding stereo upgrade. Are you satisfied with the performance of the W0 8's? I am strongly considering buying myself a pair of those now after seeing all these new 8" sub installs. Did the factory grilles out back cause any problems with mounting? It looks really good and I bet it sounds as good as looks (from your previous pics). Also, brown bread does wonders. I have 2 layers on my hatch floor, hatch sides, front floor, trans tunnel, firewall, front rockers, etc. I still need to do the wall behind the seats and the doors, but so far the results are great. Really toned down the resonance!

Be careful when using that. It sends extra power to the tweeters and can easily blow them if set high and the volume turned up....I know from experience. Best thing to do is to mount the tweeters up high and turn the dynamic off.

So far i am happy with the W0 8's. I am sure i will be even happier when i kill the resonance. I haven't put the rear covers on yet, but i know i'm going to have to modify the under side as they are not flat and i don't want contact with a moving cone. I may even need to apply a spacer ontop of my mount to be sure. Time will tell. Today i will be applying the deadener and the insulation and carpet to the cargo area. Then i will take the system for another spin and evaluate the difference. Tomorrow i am going to do the doors, the aluminum inner panel is hanging loose right now and it vibrates like mad from the mids. I want to be finished sometime during the first part of the week as the nice weather is driving me crazy. My other winter projects are going to become spring projects as i need to be cruizin NOW !!!
