head unit mounted in ash-tray?
is there enough room depth wise to fit a single din unit, like a cd or dvd player into the ash tray area?
could I do this and hide it away by shutting the door on it?

No...there is not enough depth. There are a few computers mounted to the tranny hump behind the ash tray. Maybe if those computers were moved.....which I do not think is a good idea...you might be able to get a radio there. I do believe those computers are for the airr bags and ABS..something like that.

any ideas on where to install an external DVD player?
The glove box looks really small.
I am not really sure I want to move the AC controls, unless it is fairly easy, and I dont have to extend any wires.

The AC controls can be moved to the ash tray. It takes a little cutting and some sanding. Then make a mount to hold it in place but no wire need to be extended. Then the DVD player can put where the AC was. You could also mold the AC controls into the radio bezel if you wanted. I have done a few like this....works out quite nicely.
