Finally get my install finished (well pretty much) Below are the pics! I still have to tear it apart when i get home and hook up some wires (speed sensor and reverse) as I did it in the parking lot of my apartment rather then at my dad's shop. I also am having trouble with grounding the ebrake so if anybody has any help on this it would be appreciated--I grounded it to the console in between the shifter boot and one of those nut-serts.
Anyway--enjoy the pics. For all who wants to know, i mounted the GPS antenna behind the right rear speaker against the inside of the body and thus far I have excellent reception and no problems at all.
Also, for all who want to know--the IPOD interface works EXCELLENT with the N3--i never used it with an older N or D unit so I'm not sure of the problems people had--but after using it for a few days, i would put it in again.
Does it bug you to block the AC vents, I am torn between an easy and cheaper N3 installation, or a much more complicated and much more expensive Z1 installation. The thing that bothers me is blocking the AC vents.
I'm not sure. I live in Indiana and it's still cold here (AHHHH) so nothing has ever come out of it. I imagine that when it gets hot i'll leave the navi closed (it functions even when it's put away) until the car is sufficiently cool. So, I don't know if it bothers me--I honestly don't think it will.
I had a tough decision doing this as well--but I figured I didn't really want to spend the extra time and $$ (college student) to put the full screen system in. I am very happy with the way it turned out, and I got it installed in a little over 6 hours--keeping in mind that I had to rewire my amp/sub and I have never done a head unit installation.
I also noticed that some people (member Be Gone) have put the radio below the HVAC controls--I personally dont' like the look of this; however it is a neat idea if that fits your taste. I also like the functionality (or lack thereof) of a cupholder--switching the units would hurt this.
I have my dash apart and am trying to mount the head unit as cleanly as possible. I have removed the cross brackets, cuttint the rivits was a major task, and mounted one of the to the bottom of the cage on the outside of the D1.
I am having difficulty with the top part of the radio / dash console where the two locator pins on either side of the unit are... what did you do at the top of the unit to secure it and to make sure that there is a flush fit with your front console? What did you do for a trim around the hu so that it looks clean with no "internals" sohowing??
Your write up looks great and the part about the speed sensor will help me a great deal later today!
Well i can't possibly take credit for the great writeup that priscillaLS1 did--it was really a great help for me.
Unfortunately I have an N unit-so no rivets had to be cut for me. To get a flush fit, I simply bent the bracket in the back of the console back to allow the radio to move further back in the dash. It is not perfect yet (you can still see internals) but I'm planning on taking it apart again when I get back to my father's shop and improving the fit and finish as well as complete the extra wiring I have to do.
