I'll be the first to say that I know nothing about the audio systems in our cars, but was wondering if it is possible to install a C5 Bose HU in place of the C4 Bose? The reason being the C5 units are cheaper then the C4 ones. I was wanting the CD version so that it has the SVC ( speed volume control) to increase the volume as speed increases. Is this possible? Or is there another way to get the SVC? Thanks in advance, Robert
Not sure what year your C4 is, but I was able to replace my original 84radio with the newer style GM and it works great. I figured Bose is Bose and made up a wiring harness that used two adapters. One that mates to the body wiring and another that mates to the rear of the radio / CD player. Just match up the color coding on the wires and you're in business. I also had to get an antenna adapter. The newer radios use whats called a mini antenna and you need an adapter to the std side antenna wire from the C4. There's also a connector on the back for a CD changer if you're so inclined. I haven't gotten the SVC to work but I'm happy all the same. Mine sits right where the other one was and looks factory. BTW, get one with a cooling fan on the back. Check it out!!!
Thanks, but it sounds iffy for the SVC to work since it doesn't work that well in the C5s. Landpilot, I'm not sure that your year was capable of SVC, but I could be wrong. I know that my 94 is, and could buy a radio w/ CD and it would have the SVC and would just plug in, but they tend to be pricey. It may be my only option. I just want the volume to go up as the speed and noise go up. Robert
SVC is a function of the CCM. It sends a signal to the head to increase volume with RPM.
At least that's how it works on the C4.
I would be stunned if the C5 head would work in a C4. The Bose is integrated with the CCM... which changed protocols in 1997.
I know that the late model bose from the F-body will work in an 84-89 Vette. I don't think they will even fit right in a 90-96. Again, much of this has to to with the CCM and the fact it's a Vette...
Personally, I hate Bose... I would gut the **** and be done with it.
Thanks for the info. Bogus, are you aware of any aftermarket units that could link to the ccm to use the SVC? If not I quess I'm stuck with the 94-96 CD unit that has that feature. Robert
