Info on building a Sub Box
I was wondering if anyone had any info or measurements on building a Sub Box, I have an 03 Vert and would like to add a Sub to the system for a little more punch. Also how do you connect it to the stock Bose radio?
Thanks
John
There are some plans floating around the forum here for a box that will fit in the center compartment of the trunk. I got them from Scott_FX but I know there was talk of putting them where everyone could get the plans. Hopefully someone will chime in...
The PAC adapter will have female RCA connectors. You will need to get a RCA cable with male ends on both ends. Mine was about 18' long and was just about right for length. I ran it from the radio, down the center console, then behind the driver seat, over the wheel well, along the back of the trunk and finally ending at the right compartment area of the trunk.
You can pick up RCA cables almost anywhere (ie, Best Buy/Circuit City, Radio Shack, Walmart, car/home audio stores, etc.) Keep asking away and we'll get you hooked up (literally).

That said, I would opt for more power. ED recommends 150 - 450W RMS for the 11Kv.2 sub. You can always turn down the gain on the amp if the bass is too much. Turning up the gain with too little power usually drives the signal into distortion and makes the sound bad while making it more likely to "blow" the sub (which usually means the voicecoils melted and seperated from the cone).
If you want to stay inexpensive, look at Phoenix Gold amps or Elemental Design's amps. I am toying with either PG or ED amps in my truck. You could use a PG Octane R8.0:1 (400W rms at 4 ohm or 600w RMS at 2 ohm) which costs about $190 or possibly an Octane R4.0:2 (250W RMS @ 4 ohm bridged) which costs about $100.
If you want the link to the ED sub group buy sale, let me know. I will pass along the info. The sub box is made of 3/4" MDF which will cost about $15 - $20 plus your time.
image dynamics also makes good subs but you cant really beat that ED sub at $65. for wire go with knukonceptz wires. they are a good price and blow monster cable wire out of the water (cheaper too).
Thanks for all this info, how much to build this box?
John

Just kidding. But really, I bought a whole 49" x 96" (yeah, it is an inch wider than 4 feet) sheet of 3/4" MDF at Menards here for $24. I didn't use half of that sheet to make the Vette box. I know at Menards you can buy half sheets of MDF. I used about half a bottle of Elmer's wood glue (about $5) and screws I had laying around. So yeah, you could really build the box (plain) for around $20. It does take a bit of time though. I plan to build a new cover to put over the sub box. The factory cover will stifle the sub output. I plan to use 1/8" plywood and cut a hole over the sub. Cover that hole in black grill cloth and then cover the whole thing in black carpet using factory latches to hold the cover in place. This of course will cost you a bit more money over the $20 for the box.
I have not used knukonceptz wiring but only hear good things about them. I have bought my wiring at car audio places and/or kits from Best Buy, etc. I only use 4 ga power and 12 ga speaker wire. With wiring, you are safer to go bigger.
oh and 20 bucks for the box...i hate cali!

MDF is dirt cheap here. I love the knukonceptz.com wiring, When you go to their site, compare their actual webpage to their ebay store. Sometimes its cheaper to buy from one or the other, its the same place, but they give deals and price breaks on one or the other. I went with the ebay store last time for rca cables because they had a flate rate for shipping of 5 bucks. Shipping was super fast as always. SO far i have bought an amp wiring kit and a set of 4ch rca's from them as well when i upgraded to component speakers and needed the extra set of rca's. I have nothing but good things from elemental designs. I would have gone with their stuff if i would have known about it earlier. good luck and let us know if you need anything else. Oh and dont let scott give you a hard time, the sun gets to his head sometimes
On another note which satellite radio system is best for our cars?
I found the site which do think i should order the 11 or 13 also whats d2 and d4, I might as well buy the amp from them to, which one?
thanks again

and then get the d2 (dual 2 ohm voice coil) sub
the 10" or 12" sub is up to you. the 10" sub will be a little tighter for rock and drums while the 12" will give you more bass with a bit slower recovery time...better for rap as a general rule of thumb...(i had a 12" image dynamics sub and i only listen to hip/hop on occasion...i'm a rock guy)
that amp will power either one of those subs with some power to spare.

Did you find the link to the group sale? There was a post about the group sale and should be floating around this forum. Otherwise I can PM you the link too.
Look on the Monster cable you have and see what gauge (ga) the wire is. I wouldn't use anything smaller (higher number) than 16. I personally like using 12 ga wire.

There's not much reputation left to ruin.

its more like....no need for rear speakers, spend the money saved on a better set of components for the front stage. lol
