Default 6" linear movement

Hey guys,
need some help here. I need to automate a (light weight) panel to move about 6" back and forth. I'm guessing my best choice would be to get a linear actuator, but at $100 it's kind of a steep investment. What other options do i have for reliable repeatable automations?

I was thinking lead screws but by the time i get everything i need it's going to be close to the linear actuator's cost but not be as sturdy.

then i thought about getting smooth gliding track and a motor/wheel assembly with electronic switches at the beginning and end of travel.

any ideas? thoughts? suggestions?

thanks

scott

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish and how. It could be done with just a simple dc motor, limit switches, a shaft and a couple of linear bearings.

But again it depends on what you are trying to move, how smoothly and accuratly, and the space and power requirements.

If you haven't already, check out Select Products. They have the actuators and sliding tracks of all kinds for automotive installations along with a bunch of other neat stuff.

In car audio installations that are lightweight, a simple trick is to use a power antenna, cut to the length you need, attached to the unit you are trying to push out (like a small amp drawer or electronics, etc.), and use some drawer slides from your local home improvement store for the rack to slide on. Works great, but again only for lightweight applications, and those that are pushing and pulling out, not really for pushing up.

Hope this helps!!
