Default Bose malfunction question

Have a 92 coupe equipped with the bose system. All goes well until occasionally the right rear speaker will sound like an explosion has occured in it, then buzzing very loud sounds and it will increase with engine speed added. Before long it will go away and be normal for awhile, then repeat. any ideas as to the problem ?. Thanks.

it sounds to me like the amp has died.

there is a capacitor on the amp that more than likely is the cause. they explode and then spread goo everywhere that eats things...

So what explains that after it dies and comes back to life? Does the goo go back into the capacitor and reincarnate itself until the next explosion?

The Amp is dying, the Capacitor may not have exploded, but might be leaking, so in some instances it still 'works'

there are a bunch of caps on each amp, I have replaced them on 3 sets and nobody I replaced them for has had issues.

Swap amps between the rear speakers. If the problem follows the amp then you know what to fix.

Yeah, it's a problem with the capacitors on the amp boards. Best info I have (from Dr. Don's Audio Repair) is that the C4 Bose amps were actually manufactured by Sanyo. And we all know what a top-quality brand Sanyo was in the mid-80's to mid-90's. NOT.

Realize that a capacitor "leaking" is an electrical term, not a physical term. The "leakage" refers to a gradually increasing electrical short within the capacitor, which inhibits its ability to store a charge and act like... well, a capacitor!

It has nothing to do with exploding or leaking goo onto the circuit board.

The point of this post is that if you remove the amp and examine it... the amp may look just fine. Yet still may have capacitors that are "leaking" in the electrical sense.

I'm a EE, and 99.999% of the time when I say "leaking capacitor" I am referring to the electrolyte leaking out, aka "goo on the circuit board."

100% of the time when referring to C4 Bose amps, since that is one of their most common failure modes.
