If the amp is overheating, it's due to either poor ventilation or just plain overdriving. (overdriving could include extreme loads of 2ohms or less.) If your clip lights are lit up like a Christmas tree while you are using it, you are overdriving it and probably need a bigger amp. No amount of adjusting the gains will change that. If you reduce the input gain and raise the HU for the same volume, you are still overdriving it EXACTLY the same. Except raising the output from the HU will risk clipping there. The input gains do not adjust the amount of power the amp is putting out, they only restrict the amount of input level. Amps are designed for a FIXED amount of gain, irregardless of where the "input level" is set. This is where the confusion stems from. The nomenclature is truly "input level" not "gain".
