I would love to see pics of your tweeter install if you have any. I'm currently playing with locations, and right where you have them is currently my leading candidate.

I'm kind of afraid of cutting the dash - haven't done anything like that before. Any advice in that area is appreciated.

I messed with those locations. They were fruitless. Especially the factory frame-rail locations. I measured all sorts of layouts, and my final install was easily the best-sounding IMO. YMMV.

That whole dash pad comes off as one piece and it's a fairly simple thing to locate the tweeter pods and cloth them. The tweeter install in my setup was considerably easier than the doors. The passenger door had to be built out to the back of the door panel, than a quasi-tunnel held the woofer in place. Those small carpeted sections on each door can be removed, stripped, cut, perforated and re-upholstered. It's time-consuming, but the results were certainly worth the aggravation.

I wish I had other pictures. Sorry. This was done at a time when digital cameras were not yet readily available.

BTW, squeezing a decent 6.5" mid down there is optimistic, to say the least.

I have 6.5" in the stock locations under the stock covers. Plenty of other people have posted pictures on here of 6.5" in the stock locations.

If you're willing to have a non-stock appearance you can go larger than that. My initial testing before I bought parts for this car was with some db675 out of one of my other cars. They would work but you'd have to put the grill outside the stock cover.

I've never been willing, and if I could have hidden the tweeters better, I would have. I played with some VERY good 5" mids in the factory locations and couldn't ever get the soundstage where I liked it. A larger mid wouldn't have made any difference, and the 6-7" mids I was willing to use at the time absolutely would not have fit. Time certainly has allowed shallower mounting mids, but my acceptable list is still short. Regardless if a given mid fits or not, the location remains truly awful.
