Uncontrolled Sub
I've got a JL10W6v2 in a stealth box, powered by a PDX 1.600. The sub-sonic filter is set to 15hz the x-over is set at 80hz on the amp.
My issue is that the sub seems to move almost to the point of uncontrollably. It sounds loud and clear in the passenger compartment with the trunk closed, but if the trunk is opened and the center compartment cover is off it doesn't sound clean. It moves only when it should, but it looks like it's moving too much. It doesn't move during the silence between tracks or if the volume is down.
What might the problem be?

Very true! I remembering opening the deck lid on my Z06 and hearing the sub honestly didn't sound as good, but up in front in the drivers seat, it hit Loud and Clear. I think alot of it has to do with the environment like Kale said. Hopefully that's all it is. Let me know what you come up with.

I'd assume the box was designed with that driver in mind? If not, it could be the wrong combination. A box built too large can allow a driver to easily unload at very low frequencies whether you have a subsonic filter working or not.

FYI - I posted the box maker only for box type/ construction reference, in other words to let you know that it was a well built box. I am a happy customer, for the record.
It sounds good at any volume in the passenger compartment. It's only when I pop the trunk and stand over it to look in at it.
I guess the only thing that matters is that it sounds good where I sit and anywhere within earshot of the car.

I had similar problems when I first installed my Jl12w6v2. I adjusted this by installing a remote gain control ****, adjusting my settings and bumping up the gains on my full range speakers.
According to the JL website, your subs ideal power handling, is about 400watts. A 600 watt amp is pushing enough to drive two of these subs. Perhaps you should turn down the gains or consider a smaller amp. A JL A1400 series amp should fit power needs.

While 600 Watts is pushing the safety zone for that sub, it should be OK. If it sounds good in the passenger compartment then I'd close the trunk and be happy. How often are you really going to be sitting in the trunk?

I'm with spkrboy on this one, just because you can't hear it when the trunk is closed, doesn't mean it's not going crazy. I'd double check the internal volume of the box, the specs on the sub and then if they are off then adjust the box volume accordingly (add some blocks of wood to take up some space if needed)

As long as your box is somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0 ft^3, you should be fine. To be more precise, a box of about 0.75 with a bit less than a pound of polyfill should be best. This driver should NOT be in a vented enclosure, no matter what JL says on its site. If your box meets these requirements, you're probably just seeing typical high-xmax driver behavior, and there's nothing wrong.

Thank you all for the help. The box is not vented and I don't believe it has fill in it (I bought it loaded). I'll contact the supporting vendor that built my box to get internal spec info. On second thought, maybe he'll chime in here?

Hey Damon, that box has an internal volume of around 0.78-0.83 cu ft. That box did not have polyfill in it because I didn't think the sub needed to act like it was in a bigger enclosure as that is what polyfill usually does. It may need a little in it for damping factors but not for volume sake. Let me know if you need any other info, Damon!

It sounds great with the top down. I popped the trunk and removed the center cover to show someone the subwoofer while it was playing and only then did I have the previously stated issue. That's the only time! Under any other condition it's great.
I think I'll just take Shangreer's advice and stay out of the trunk.
