The depth measurement changes based on where you measure. Because the factory grille panel is slanted relative to the frame-rail behind it, the depth you have available will depend on the diameter of the magnet, the frame and how close to the bottom you can move the driver.
There's no simple answer, and trial/error is the only solution.

anyone know the mounting depth allowed in the OEM front speaker area?
Assume I want the speakers to fit under the OEM grille
It is a function of both depth and magnet size. Surveying what people have used and checking the measurements of those is probably the best bet.
I have 6010cs under my stock unmodified grilles. I had to trim the sill cover a little, and the sill cover is pushed out slightly from flush (not noticeable to anybody but me).
When I was fiddling with it before deciding what to buy, I tried the db675 out of another car and determined that db6750 would work under the stock covers if you trimmed the plastic part of the grille some. I didn't want to do that, so I went a little smaller.

Going by what you said, it looks like about 2" I was also thinking of doing what I did in my 89 but I would need figure out a clean way to mod the 94-96 door panels.. the 90-93 are easier to mod for speakers
Well, I have no 94-96 panel experience. The 90 & 92 I did were both a huge PITA, so I can't imagine how hard it'll be to do the newer panels.
I realize there may be color-matching issues, but what about grabbing a set of used 90-93 panels from Contemporary or somewhere and working those instead? Then you can save the originals. Just a thought.

Thought of that, but don't need to save the originals, I have 94-96 panels on my 90.. LOL
I bought it that way
I have a chance to swap to the 90-93 syle, but I kind of Like the 94-96 panels and the storage bins in them
all I need is the panels perforated and then some sort of cap for the holes (like a grille cloth cover)
I know how I will mount the speakers, in my 89 they sounded good the way I had them mounted, then I have no real depth issues with the 4" and tweeter itn eh OEM location
Jeff... I am so shocked... you haven't seen my 3-way install.
It's easier on the early door panels, cause they are multiple pieces. On the later ones, you will have to recover the entire panel.
This requires custom work to build up a mount... there isn't enough room back there. The space for the tweeter is very limited, too.
I made a speaker pod from MDF, some cardboard and fibreglass resin. That made a solid enough cylinder to support the speaker. I then hot-glued the cylinder into a hole I cut on the carpeted panel, leveled it and let it set.
After the glue set, I filled the area with spray foam, that created the base contour I wanted, which I filled over with Bondo. Sanded a bit and then covered. I have since redone the covering in black vinyl.
When I had the 3 way in my 89, I had the Midbass in the door and the 4 and tweet int he frame rail in a custom enclosure.
now that the 89 is for sale, my 90 needs to get the 3-way system, if I had the 90 panels it would be a no brainer, but I have the 94-96 panels and as you said it would need to be recovered completely, or maybe capped oer where the sound will come through.
See in my 89 all I did was mount the speakers to the doors flat behind the panels, i just made openings covered with Grille cloth to get the sound through into the cabin, it sounded VERY good.
I plan on the same or hope for the same, depending on what I end up doing about the panels
With the later panels, I would consider covering the entire panel... you won't fit a speaker in there, there just isn't enough room.
You might tho, fit something way back, as in, actually attached to the inner door skin, and yes, as you suggested, add a grill of some sort. For some reason, I feel you would loose sound... just not direct and entirely too muted.
I have a 96 panel in my garage... would you like it to experiment with?

Yeah honestly for the 80-200hz (maybe 500hz) I personally did not notice a loss of sound. I forget the crossover point of my passives. which panel do you have? right or left,, I might be interested in it for experimenting

This makes it real difficult to get speakers when ordering over the internet, unless you order from one of the bigger companies that are easy on returns. They tend to be more expensive then local shops, and then whats the point. I've tried to fit a couple. Some were successfull some werent. Also with the back speakers in a vert there can be fitment issues. Any recomendations on speakers that are guaranteed to fit in the factory front or rear vert holes of a later C4? So the front is approximately 2" give or take. What is the back depth on a vert? It would be nice to get exact measurements added to the C4 sticky. A list of speakers that have been used would also be good. I didn't see anything on my 95 vert or did I miss it? One more question, why can't I search the audio section for C4?
Thanks
