So... two 10s or a single 12?
I have a 2000 C5 into which we have fitted a 12” kicker solobaric (the square one) driven by the Kenwood 401 bass amp. To cut to the chase, the install shop (who did all the donkey work) said it was the loudest, hardest hitting bass they had heard in any vehicle they have fitted a system into, and thought it would get good db readings in a competition. They were getting 130 odd db’s with their tester, with the door open, while we were setting up the car. I know, not comp levels but very very loud for a single 12. Even just ticking over it feels like you have static electricity in your hair as you feel the air moving by, and if you really want, it is possible to make your jeans flap in the front of the car. Needless to say this is bass you can feel.
Here’s why this is a killer combination. The solobaric is designed to work in small sealed enclosures, even more so than their other speakers, and the C5 has just such an enclosure in the rear center of the car. The install shop made a fiberglass box for the solobaric which fitted into this enclosure which turned out at about 1.25 cu foot, perfect, look at Kickers’ specs. Next pump in lots of current. Without going into details, it is current which drives bass units, so you want an amp. which will double its power as the load impedance halves. The 401 achieves close to this, pumping out around 1KW at low impedances, hence the marriage made in heaven.
Now here’s the real gravy. Because the kicker fits into the center storage compartment there is no real intrusion into the rear storage space in the C5 coupe so you end up with a real clean install, except, of course, for that bad butt Kicker spiked grill which punches holes into your K-Mart bags when you’ve been shopping with the better ‘alf…
One word of caution. Cross the kicker over as low as you can with a high ‘q’ filter. I’m at 50hz. right now otherwise you will get mid base leaking through and getting boosted like crazy making the system extremely tiresome. You’ll therefore need some decent mid bass units. I fitted four Boston pro’s into the original speaker locations which will go down pretty low and give you a tight mid bass and up.
Enjoy…
