Good sound but not too expensive, I dont need a 12' sub that rattles my windows and teeth. Something that will be able to hear through my aftermarket embroiled floor mat in the back, this is what had kept me from buying one in the past.
Hey guys,
Any idea about how much one of the hangover boxes weighs? How much lighter are the 1/2" mdf boxes? Putting together some ideas for my c5z but trying to save weight.
Thanks
I'm looking for a sub enclosure for a 99' vert. However, I would like it to fit recessed in the ctr compartment with a protective grill as i wouldn't want the golf clubs damaging the woofer. Also, if needed have the original storage cover fit back in place when sub is not in use. Is this a practicle application for you?
Also, do you ship to Toronto,Canada?

Hi, the hangover box in 3/4" weighs around 35-40lbs. The 1/2" weighs around 7-10 lbs lighter. I don't have one of each to weigh right now, but give or take a couple pounds that is what they are.

Hi, I can make a sub enclosure according to your specs, but putting a grill on the box and having it recessed will make finding a sub a little difficult. This is because depth of the box will be shallow and airspace will be alot less than the typical stealth box or hangover box. Shipping to Canada can be arranged, but will be a little pricey.

OK, if it's not recessed but with a grill will I encounter any damage from cargo? Also, what's a little pricey?
I'm thinking of putting a 10W3v3 from JL Audio in it. Is this at all possible without sacrificing sound quality?
Note: This system will be for clean, crisp sound with some bottom end. No heavy car shaking bass.

I can build a stealth enclosure for a JL 10w3 and it fit under the compartment cover, but there would be no room to put a grill under there too. On a hangover box you could do a JL 10w3 with a grill and it should be ok. You shouldn't encounter damage to the sub with a grill over it. I am pretty sure that a grill on a sub would not fit on a stealth box under the compartment cover. I just really depends on how tall the grill is and how deep the box needs to be to accomodate the particular sub. As for the shipping, send me your address and I will get you a quote on a stealth box and a hangover box , just to give you an idea on what the shipping would be.
if going with a stealth box why the need for a grill? the oem cover should be plenty adequate
I presume you can't listen to the sub with the oem cover in place so, wouldn't a grill be necessary as to not damage sub while playing when cargo is in trunk?
????? No/yes?

It depends on the sub used. If the sub isn't too deep and doesn't have a thick surround, then they can be used under the compartment cover. If a sub will fit in a smaller stealth box, then I can make the box smaller to help with this situation. Bass travels at low frequencies, so the cover will not effect performance that much unless you have a sub who's surround is thick and either bumps the compartment cover or is too deep that it has to fit in a bigger stealth box which causes to compartment cover to be very close to the sub itself. For instance, a JL 10w3v3 sub will work in a smaller stealth enclosure and work fine under a cover, however a JL 10w6 will need a bigger stealth box and may require cutting of the carpet on the bottom to make it fit under a compartment cover. Usually when subs go this big, customers get a hangover box and put a grill over the sub then to protect them.
I'm working on the final specs for the box now but i'm checking on the possibility of a 3/4" MDF Hangover box for this sub. The magnet on it looks like it has a huge diameter around 8-9". The box should be between 1.25 ft^3 plus the sub displacement.

Reason: update box specs
I assume you can sell a box unassembled? to save on shipping costs? I have a woodworking shop so assembly wouldn't be an issue for me at all.
I have a Z06 and would much rather put a couple 10s in each corner and build the box up above the side compartments to give it the necessary volume. This I could see doing myself and justifying my time just not sure which route I want to take at the moment.
Could you comment on how the center compartment looks after your sub box has been in it for some time? Does the box have sharp corners than wear into the carpet or are they all rounded? Where is the weight concentrated? Any need or benefit to placing towels between the box and carpet to protect the carpet??

Hi, Paul, sorry for the delay in response. I overlooked this post somehow! The center compartment will get a little wear due to the vibration of the box. This will happen pretty much with any box, unless you take preventative measures such as putting foam on the underside of the box, etc. The box has squared corners, but can be rounded if the customer specifically asks to do so. The weight is pretty much equally distibuted throughout the box. Most of the weight if not equally distributed would appear to be on the front corners of the box. Felt can be applied here if damaging your carpet is a concern. Placing towels under the box would make the box sit higher than normal and with stealth applications, may not allow the use of the factory compartment cover. The sub being used will have alot to do with this as I can decrease the actual height of the box if the particular sub will allow a change in depth of the box. Hopefully this will help answer your questions. If you need additional info, let me know.

Try and go to www.doubledmods.com and see what the shipping calculator comes up with. I'm not sure if the site does shipping calculations or not. If not, let me know and I will figure you a quote.
Would 2 jl 10w3's fit in either setup? I have been torn between what I want to do. I like the idea of having everything hidden under my embroidered carpet but you already said it wouldnt work with one 10w6 which is what I would want if I did a single 10 setup. My next option is the 2 10w3 subs so if that can't work with the stealth box then i will just have to figure out the best option, 1 10w6 or 2 10w3's in the hangover style...
...forgot to mention it's a c5 coupe

I think after reading this thread I'm close to pulling the trigger on a stealth enclosure for my '02 vert. But I need some help with selecting the correct sub or subs to go with it.
Like Jason mentioned above, I want clean, tight, musical bass. Not big, sloppy, splashy "how low can you go" bass.
So, one speaker or two? Also, do you make boxes that would fit two 8" subs and still leave room to mount my JL amp in the center recess? Or is that going to compromise the sound I'm looking for? TIA.

Hi, two JL 10w3's will fit, but airspace will not be enough to provide their maximum and best response. It will probably be Boomy. Each sub requires 0.625 cu ft and my stealth box can have a maximum of 0.84 cu ft. One JL 10w6 will work in a stealth enclsoure, but you may have to trim the carpet out of the bottom of the center well. I have built tons of stealth boxes with the JL10w6 and honestly I think all have fit under the compartment cover. Forum member Mister Peebody has a stealth box with a JL 10w6 that fits under his compartment cover. I don't know if he had to trim the carpet in the bottom or not. The excursion on that particular sub is just too big for me to be comfortable with running it in a stealth box, that is unless the carpet is trimmed in the bottom of the well to allow the box to sit lower. Have you checked out the elemental designs 11kv.2 sub? That is a great sub and can perform in as low of 0.3 cu ft. You may could go with two of these in a stealth enclosure. That ED sub seems to be pretty popular.
