I've heard most and had a JL Audio 12w3 sub in my C5.
Just installed their new 12w7. This thing is so clean an
hits so hard, I feel like I just went 10 rounds with Tyson!
A Must for audiofiles and base nuts alike!!
Where did you pick it up? How much? What type of enclosure? How much power and what amp/model? What's its mounting depth?
Signed Jealous one needing trans work first.
Yes, I want to see this install as well. I am still investigating my subwoofer options as we speak. I also want to know how much power you are driving it with and how much you had to give for it.
How much air space did you give the L7 and how much power are you feeding it? I am still trying to decide my sub setup. I was leaning towards 2 10" L7s but I haven't ruled out a single 12" L7 like your setup.
I still really like the JL W7 but you can't buy a grill for it and that is just to much of a risk to take since I do carry stuff in the back of my car every now and again.
The 10w7 is like 800 bucks a piece. The problem is that they require sooo much airspace that you may not have enough in the rear center compartment. Also the 10w7 is not a typical 10"sub (wont fit in a 10" hole). Im my case I cannot get them because of the mounting depth. They are very tall if you have ever seen one in person compared to a typical woofer. Most of us dont have enough power to move one more less two.... :cry
I do agree... they are some of the badest woofers on the market, but I think I'll pass...
Not sure where you are getting your information from but the 10W7 can be yours for $499. Still not cheap but it is definately not $800. It also only requires 1.25 cubic feet for a sealed enslosure which will easily fit into the center hole. Now, it you want a ported enclosure, then the install becomes a little more tricky as you need 1.5 cubic feet. They do require a mounting depth of 9" (8" for the driver plus an inch of space for the polepiece vent to the panel behind the driver) which is rather deep but still possible.
I am strongly considering a 10W7 right now.
I'm running a Soundstream 1000sx at 2ohms mono (1000 clean watts :yesnod: ) to the sub. It's in the Kicker supplied wedge
box. I'm also running a optima yellow top, but the only thing
missing now is a cap.
I have two 10W7 going into my truck now in a fiberglass box with two Arc Audio 1500 going to each. I will be putting a 12W7 in my vette as well soon. They sound unbelieveable.
Sorry about the price misunderstanding .. you are right .. they are 499.. The 12 was closer to number I quoted earlier. In the rear of a C5 you only have 1.6 cubic feet of space. Are you only going to run 1- 10"? I currently have 2 10's now. Do they not require big power to drive it??
The local shop told me a minimum of 750W for a 10W7 and 1000W for a 12W7. I didn't even want to know about the 13W7.
I was going to go with a single 10W7 in a 1.5 ft3 ported box but I think I have decided on a pair of Image Dynamics IDQ10D4v.2. I can get them online for $200/pair. I just can't justify the extra $300 to own a 10W7.
Thanks Tracy, I did all of the work myself. I love the L7, I've got plenty of power to it. I think my next project will be a slightly larger box than the original Kicker Wedge. I would like to get 1.5 or 1.75 cu ft, I know it would help with some of the lower frequency's.
True...and if it's sealed, the 2.0 sealed is the optimum (.707 SQ alignment) enclosure, but if you use the 1.75 vented...you'll really be amazed!
Awesome install!
Sorry for the delay -
I picked my sub up for $545 including tax out the door!!! I built a VERY solid 1.5 Cubic foot box (which isn't very big) just to try this out. (I'm going to rebuild the box changing the dimensions a bit so it will sit nicely in the center well.) The real news is that I am powering it with a JL Audio 500/1 and it hit so loudly (and I like it LOUD) that I had to turn the gain down!! The JL reps say it could use more power to really get the best out of it. Well, I can't imagine getting "more" out of this - that is if I still want to hear afterwords.
Here's the best part -
Percussion feels like you been punched
Extended base guitar notes make you feel like an Alka Setzer tablet in water - makes your hair stand on end!!!
..and NOTHING I have ever heard compares to the sound quality - and thats my main interest!! ( I run the sub along with 2 sets of MB Quarts and an ADS amp). GET THIS SUB!!!
The sub sounds unbelievable and is worth every penny in my mind. I have two 10W7 in a rather small box, 1.1 cubic ft each with only 450 watts to each. We are trying to stay in the 301-600 class when we compete. Anyway, this sub sounds tremendous and has the best impact and SQ of any sub I have heard, and I have competed in and out for over 8 years. You would never guess they are 2 10"s 450 is enough power to each, but the sub can take way more and you can feel it. There is way more potential there.
In a vette, you could do a 12W7 in the center storage compartment, The mounting depth will be close though and remember, this thing is not light. It will add some weight to your car. I will probably be putting a 10W7 in my vette along with 6 Focal 5.25" mini subs in the front. I will post some pics of my truck soon and will keep you updated on the vette system.
Hey, have any of you guys heard about the Image Dynamics IDMAX. It is 12" SQL driver. I know that it is not a W7 but I heard that it is pretty much the #2 sub this year (behind the W7 of course). I can pick one up for $300. Quite a bit cheaper (and lighter) than a W7.
