Hi All - Question
1990 Convertible.

Had a inoperable factory Bose system that was turned into a Frankenstein system. Numerous car stereo shop abortions found.
Long story short, I now have a great system that I put in myself. New head unit, and front speakers. All nice and tidy now. I used the aftermarket rear speakers that were still there along with a small amp.

The new head unit puts out 22amps and it powers the 2 new 4ohm front speakers. The small amp in the back powers the 2 aftermarket 4ohm speakers.

Here's the question. Am I getting 22amps PLUS the amp's output at the rear 2speakers? There're Kenwood 6x9's. It seems to me that if I didn't have the amp back there, the head unit's 22amps would be powering the rear speakers. Now that there's an amp back there, I should be getting more power to them, right?

Thanks for the education.

While I am no expert on this, I would assume that each circuit is limited to a dedicated allowance of the total wattage available by the unit.

Whatever the amp is rated at is what the rears are getting. It doesn't matter if you have the RCA line levels from the HU or speaker levels supplying it.

Thanks for the knowledge. I really learned a lot going thru this 20years of hack jobs system.

I wondered because during the installation, the rears are so much louder when powered by the amp, then when they are not powered by the amp. The install is done now, and all is good. The amp is only 16w, so I'm kind of surprised, because the head unit is 22w.

The HU is 22 watts PEAK, not continuous. Really about 14 watts.
