How can I adjust the speed of an 8 track in a 77? This is the original radio
What the hell???
I appreciate your sincerity to originality bro...seriously.
I have no idea as I was born in 1969, but frankly I thought I would never see a question like this... I am interested just for the once in a lifetime knowledge opportunity I may gain on this one.
Is the speed variation constant, too fast or too slow, or does it oscillate up and down?
If the speed is constantly too fast or slow, there may be a trimmer pot that can fine tune the motor's RPM's. Or you may have to replace/rebuild the motor.
If the battery is very low, the resulting low voltage may slow the motor as well.
Best case though, may be that things just need to be lubed.
To further date myself, the first aftermarket music player I ever saw in a car played 45's. You know, vinyl records with the big holes in them. Mono of course, and the thing was the size of a small toaster oven.
It was in a hot-rodded, 40's vintage, ****** Coupe and Sam the Sham and the Pharaos' 'Woolly Bully' never sounded so good. I was on a Schwinn 10 speed. Obviously this made a lasting impression.

Reason: 8 track not 4 track, duh.
The preferred method when I was in high school (a little before 1977)was to rip the top off a pack of matches, fold it in half and wedge it under the 8-track player.
The drive roller(s) will get tape residue build-up on it/them and cause the tape to play fast. If this is the issue, a thorough cleaning of the drive roller(s) may solve your issue.

I had one of those in my first car. The arm had a spring that would pull it up with a fair amount of force, so it wouldn't skip. I would rip through needles like there was no tomorrow, and don't even try to listen to my 45's on a real turntable, Holy Crap, snap, crackle and pop. I coudl stack 8 45's on it, and hooked up to my reverb unit, it had a great sound
