When I get home from my deployment, I am installing a whole new audio system. One question I have is where is the optimum tweeter location, behind the door pulls or down in the door with the mid bass driver? Those are the only two locations I am looking at, not messing with the a-piller.

Both are pretty bad, but for different reasons.
Behind the door pull you're going to get all kinds of nasty reflections and other sound problems just because the tweeter is sitting in a dish behind a door handle. On top of that, the tweeter ends up being much closer to you than the woofer. On top of that, the dish situation mentioned before will cause strong side bias.
Next to the woofer is, generally, a good position. In this car you will end up with side bias and lost frequency response. On top of that, your leg is going to block it unless you're 4'11 and skinny.
I would also base my tweeter choice on your desired install location. If you insist on using the door handle, find a set that has a high cutoff between woofer and tweeter. (Say, tweeter plays above 4k only.)
I was in the same situation. I am getting ready to install a stereo in my 09 Z06. I decided on the A pillar but instead of destroying my original trim, I found a used pair of pillar trims on ebay for $60. My plan is to remove the vinyl from those and fabricate tweeter mounts on those and recover them with matching vinyl.
That said, many tweeters include surface mount bezzels which could be easily modified to mount to the surface of the pillar cover. There are also some really small and thin tweeters on the market that can be installed into the pillar without making a mount. The down side to that approach would be the quality of the tweeter.
While it may be a pain to do the pillar mount, if you are going through the trouble and expense to install a sound system, the additional expense or labor to install the tweets in the pillar would be well worth the effort in my opinion and experience.
Do it right the first time or you might end up kicking yourself in the rear down the line..
I installed a completely new system in the wife's C5 a few months ago and have been PM'ing with another member who offered to mold the tweeters in the A-pillars but suddenly got very busy so I'm looking for someone else who can do the project. I had some time this weekend and played with the tweeter A-pillar mount. I settled on the position in the pic below. I went ahead and cut crude holes in the pillars and pressed the tweeters into them so the wife wouldn't have to drive around with the tweets hanging on for dear life. It sounds ten times better than with them in the door. The wife was thrilled with the change as she was complaining about how muffled they sounded in the doors mounted right next to the mids.
They definitely need to be molded in as there is not enough room in the pillar behind them - they are pushed up against the metal post in the pillar. I have an extra set of A-pillars I bought used to send for the molding job once I find someone who can do this.
Thanks for all the responses! I just really hate to screw with the A-pillars and changing the look of the car. Keeping it stock looking is a hanging point with me. Plus, the big reason is that I wont be able to afford having someone mod my a-pillars. I am spending enough on the system. Who knows though, maybe one of these days I can get it done! Thanks all!
