i have never had an issue with tweeter protrusion on an fbody. personally i would do components and flush the tweeter into the door panel
I was considering going with components in the doors, I even went so far as to buy a pair of Firebird interior panels, the ones that have the provisions for the tweeters built in. Only after going that far, did I realize that GM, in their infinite wisdom, made a few significant changes in the door wiring systems between the Camaro and Firebird. Also, there are a couple of differences in the way the panels are attached to the door frame.
It abruptly became apparent that this wasn't going to be a 4-5 hour, "plug and play" installation, and further complications were around finding suitable location for the component's x-over. At that point I stood back, took a deep breath, and decided to can the whole idea.
Before I retired, I spent at least an hour a day commuting back and forth to work, and a good stereo was important to me. I don't spend that much time in the car anymore, so a "quick and dirty" upgrade is all I'm looking for...
