So I've had issues with my front driver speaker for a couple months now and more or less knew it was nearing it's end. It would cut out for a bit and then kick back on. I noticed it happened more over bumps and if you turned up the volume it would kick back in. I first checked all the wire connections and things seemed fine.
After some more investigating recently, I read other people had the same issue and it turned out to be the voice coil.
Sure enough, this morning on my way to work, the speaker blew and I was treated to a lovely smell and some smoke.
I took the door panel off and removed the speaker and it was all charred around the part where the coil is.
Anyways, the other side still seems to be working but will probably just go ahead and get new fronts/components.
They were Focal 165V1 Polyglass 6.5 Components. I had the mounting brackets someone here used to sell. My rears are Focal 130CA1 5.25 and they still seem to working just fine. The setup is just about 4 years old. I'm running a JL Stealthbox, but the speaker is an Elemental Designs sub and amp. The other speakers are powered by a JL 300/4.
So...what are some recommendations as far as replacing the fronts go? I really liked the quality of the sound of the Focal, but haven't really kept up on what's hot lately.
Don't want to spend tons of money, but don't want crap. I think the Focals cost me a couple hundred, so would like to stay in about that range and also be able to continue running the same JL 300/4 amp to power them along with the rears.
Speakers are one of those personal things that everyone has an opinion on, but it's all up to your own ears.
I was happy with my Polk DB's until I heard some CDT's that only cost a few bucks more. I'm VERY happy with my CDT's
If you liked the Focals, make sure they got whatever issue you had fixed and get another set. If they deny a problem, but you know for a fact that others had the same issue, then it may be time to shop around.
I've found a set of Polk Audio MM6501, which I've read a lot of good reviews on for $190 shipped. That's from an authorized dealer Polk lists on their site, and they retail for $330.
I haven't heard them, but have read they are pretty similar to the Focal, many have preferred them. I'm not going to be TOO fussy here, I really just want my fronts to actually work again. Was dealing with the front driver side cutting so much that just having them all work again will sound like magic.
Only problem with the Focal, is the authorized dealers are expensive. I got mine from an unauthorized dealer, so who knows if they were up to par or not...

What's your price on a set of 165 V30 or the 165 A3?
Right now I'm pretty set on some Polk MM6501's from Onlinecarstereo for $190 shipped. That's a good price for those from an authorized dealer, and from what I've read the MM's are very nice sounding, maybe not as bright as the Focal's, but many have preferred them...

myself
I would only go with the K2 series from Focal.
the rest in what your asking for is not the greatest and the Polk will better
You bring up an interesting question. I also have a '96 Camaro, along with my 'Vette. When I first got the Camaro, back in the fall of '95, I immediately pulled the OE HU and speakers and replaced them with Pioneer pieces.
The speakers still sound decent, I guess, but after 15 years of use, they might be a little "tired". I've been thinking about replacing them, but don't want to go crazy, $$ wise. The Camaro uses the oddball 6.75" speaker, and has a fair amount of speaker mounting depth, but not a lot of room for a speaker with a "tall" tweeter, especially the door speakers. I know that a speaker that small won't produce a lot of bass, but being a classic rock fan, I'd like something with decent bass capability.
I've looked at all the manufacturer's spec sheets, and some say their speakers will reproduce down to 35hz, while others are in the 55-60hz range. A co-worker suggested Focal. I'd appreciate any thoughts you could provide. TIA!
I understand there are alot of Focal counterfeits flooding the market. An actually 'charred' unit would certainly make me wonder.
I use JL C5-650 components in my doors and love em.
Very good mids with silk tweeters that are smooth as a 50 year old scotch. 75w ea from a 300/4 is more than enough to make them sound real nice.

If you're going Focal, make sure you buy them from someone reputable like Dennis.
I love my C5-650's too, runn 100w each via a HD900/5.

I would take the oem plastic mount and remake it out of 1/4 mdf and cut a hole to fit a 6.5... it will be strogner then the oem plastic mounts
Ya who knows, they could have been knock offs or 2nd hand...they were cheap, but they did sound great and lasted 2 years. got my money out of them. this time I ordered some Polk 6501's from an authorized dealer, but still found a great deal on them.
