My stereo sounds like crap, just not very clear at all, and I honestly just don't know what to do, you only have the front speakers in a C4 and my two 6.5" round speakers just suck,
What can I do to improve my setup? I am tempted to put some 6x9's in the rear and leave the 6.5's in the front and buying a separate 10" sub to sit in the hatch area
Head unit = Eclipse CD4000
Rear Speakers
Two 2-8" JBL subs with 2 x 150 watt amp
You only have front speakers in an 85? My 90 had 4. I put 6x9 in the back and 5.25 in the front doors and it would blast you out of it with no amp or sub.
I do think the eclipse is a good HU. Good choice. I know a lot of people put subs in these things, but I've spoken to more than one audio person and they said subs were overkill in these cars with 6x9 speakers. Also said 4 speakers was overkill. But with 6.5 speakers I can see the need for a sub. I'm going to put in a sub or 6x9 Focals in my partion in my FRC. can't decide which would be better. However with this said I know there are some people really serious about this so it comes down to personal choice.

I think that will work great Larry, You'll be very happy w/ the results.
Good Luck,

Cool, I ordered a pair of tweeters,, so the setup will be two 6.5" 2-way in door, two 6.5" 2-way in rear and two 8" sub, 2-inverted dome tweeters on top of dash/pillar area.

I think that's your best bet. With subs you don't need the 6x9's, and the 6.5 with subs will give you a better sound.
6x9's are best suited for those who skip the subs.
Tonight I mocked up the rear 6.5's with the two subs in the storage area,,, 4 Focals , same model,,, 1000% better BUT,, I still need to add the tweeters I ordered to the top of the dash area/pillar when they arrive, that will balance out the front and rear since the fronts are pointing at my knees, right now it sounds great but the tweeters in the rear are not balanced, hence the need for the front tweeters.
I'm gonna pump 400 watts mono to the subs and the 4 / 6.5's will have 4x100
I am pleasantly pleased with the simple effort, I need to make boxes for the subs / storage compartments, then its good to go.

I added 4x6 infinity kappas (462.9cfp) to the stock dash openings normally used for nonBose Vettes.
I had just replaced the Blose with 6x9's in the rear and 4" in the door (no cutting required) but they were still missing that fuller sound that the Dash speakers completely solved.
Larry,
Because of the extra space you have, you can use some large format tweeters. Take a look over at Madisound.com. If you would like a used set of crossovers, I believe I have a set somewhere in my house. I will send them to you for the cost of shipping; that way your tweeters will only reproduce the highs the are meant to. Just hooking them up to you HU will make them try to play the full range of the musical spectrum, not what you want.
Send me a PM if I can help.
