I have a 2011 GS, single play CD infotainment center. Have not had it that long. I recently tried my iPod Classic, connected with the standard 1/8 in. jacks/cable and get no sound from the car system. It was set on AUX and the iPod appears to be playing.
I hate it when I join a forum and the first question I ask reveals what an idiot I am.
Ya know how your experience tells you that everything Radio Shack brand is crap!? We had been at the Apple store and bought a couple of things and didn't feel like paying Apple prices for a new cable, so we went to Radio Shack. Upon walking in the store, we are met by a display wall of audio connectivity crap, name brand stuff. Slick G (me), though, knows how to save a buck and heads for the back of the store where there is a wall of Radio Shack connectors.
Well wouldn't you know....that new cable didn't work. Working on the premise that an iPod should work, we did switch cables and viol`a (for some reason it wouldn't let me put the grave accent over the (a) like it should).
Don't feel bad. I fix things for a living and you would be amazed at how many "new off the shelf" parts are defective these days. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the RS cable came off the same Chinese assembly line as the Apple one, there are lots of 'name brand' electronics out there with really expensive stickers on them.
