Guys, I'm currently in the process of planning out a complete stereo upgrade for my 2013 427 convertible. I've been using several online speaker fitment guides such as on Crutchfield to determine what speakers I'm going to use.
I plan to put 6.5 components in the doors and I've read a number of posts where it was stated that people got speakers to fit that according to the fitment guide were not supposed to fit.
I'm wondering if anyone has taken their own measurements of available backspace and also the clearance of what fits before it impacts the ability to put the door panel back on.
I did three way components. Used jl audio 3way passive cover fro mids and tweets. Active band pass cover using radio and amp settings for the 10" midbass.
Tweeter - jbl softdome in dash location
Midrange - 3.5" Infinuty perfect
Midbass/woofer- 10" mbquart discus
Sealed the door and added lots of dynamat.
Easiest thing ever. Just used a door panel removal tool. It pops right out. Plastic tool so it won't damage the dash. I then used exacto blade to cut the stock tester's adhesive. Installed new tweeters and secured with epoxy. Ran new speaker wire throughout. Dash speaker wire just drops in from top.
When I was shopping for 6.5" components, I took the approach that any 6.5" speaker would fit. I ended up installing a set of Focal KRX2's with no issue. The KRX2's have a 3-1/16" mounting depth for the woofer which was more than what most other 6.5" speakers were asking for. My point is, depth for a 6.5" speaker should not be a problem.

How does this sound? I cannot find the specification of frequency response on the MBQUART Discus, but it is listed as a subwoofer. The 10" speaker in our doors is a sub/mid-range woofer from my understanding. Don't you give up a lot of midrange going to just 3.5s and a sub in the door?

It sounds amazing. I didn't want to give up the lower frequency up front. I have it playing 40hz to 250 hz. Midrange picks up at 250 and up. Tweeter at 3500.
